My BITS is set to Auto (Delayed) so I'm not sure what you're saying here.When I launched Windows Update, I immediately got an error message (can't remember the code). Internet research led me to find out that BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) was set to Disabled instead of Manual. Very strange.
I've had no problems at all updating to the recent batch of security updates, though I have NOT installed KB2952664.
