Solved Easeus todo for images?

I thought I'd start a separate thread. I am having issues completing an image backup using Windows 7 built in software. It always used to work well and have used it restore from but lately it seems to claim my USB hard drive disconnected right near the end causing the backup to fail. Aggravating as the 650 gb image can take a few hours. It may be a problem with the USB drive itself (despite not actually disconnecting as I can always still see it connected). So will try another one but am thinking I need a third party solution. A couple of you kindly recommended macrium but I got put off slightly because you need to create a winPE for booting at times of recovery and its s huge download etc.

I just want to image the entire drive from time to time in a really simple way. I know a lot the data is static but if it takes a few hours it's not a problem. That's why I liked Windows own image software for its simplicity. And as long as you've got the windows media disc then you can boot to the recovery environment. So the third party solution I just want an easy ability to create the recovery DVD to burn without a colossal download or complications. When Windows image finished it gives option of a start up recovery disc which burns in no time at all. I'm looking for something very similar. I did find easeus todo on the net. Is this any good as a freebie? Simplicity is key for me, not fussed about bells and whistles or incrementals etc. Just want to be able to do a basic entire disc image from within Windows with ease to restore

Cheers,
Wayne

Hi Wolfgang,

Can i ask why you still use version 5 and not version 6 ?
The changes in V6 is what sold me on changing from Acronis to Macrium.

Thanks, I'm just waiting for my new portable HD to come tomorrow and will try it with Windows own image software and if that fails I'll try and locate macrium v5, their site seems to only have v6. I am still wondering if it's because it's a portable USB 3.0 drive I am trying to use that causes it to fail right near the end. In the past when I used Windows image I always had an externally powered USB drive before it failed. It always seemed to work. The last image I did was about 9 months ago so I also wonder if good old windows updates have changed something in all this time which has ruined the software (but I think unlikely). I ordered another portable drive and will send the other one back. The trouble is on Amazon decently priced powered USB drives (I need 1 terrabyte) are hard to find. They all seem to be portable drives now.

Same here except it's not laziness. I run the last version update of V5 on my PC and it has all the features I currently need. I don't want to use incremental or differential imaging and I don't want the software to purge images. I have V6 on another PC because that is what is on offer now and think some of the added options could be confusing.

You can try Windows own image software. If it works for you, that's fine. It just has little options and is a bit iffy or touchy when played with.

Thank you. I notice there are numerous version 5.xxxxxxx listed. Is there a specific one I should download that is compatible with your WinPE iso or just pick the latest v5 on the list? Apologies but I'm not really geared up on iso etc. When I download from your sky drive is there just one file or multiple files? Do I burn them exactly as they are to disc and it's ready to be used as a recovery disc for restoring images should Windows go completely wrong?

Use the latest 5.x. And regarding the download from my site - it is 1 iso to be burnt to CD.

Ok thank you very much. You have been so helpful. Tomorrow night I will try the toshiba drive due for delivery tomorrow with Windows own image software to eliminate whether the Samsung drive I have at the moment is at fault or whether it's Windows to blame. I'm going to use a different USB 3.0 port too. If it fails then I will use Friday night to download macrium, burn the iso and take an image of the entire drive. Hopefully macrium will do it faster than Windows, 650-700 gb takes about 4 to 5 painful hours which is why it's particularly frustrating when the backup fails. I wished if it was going to fail it would do it much earlier and save a lot of time.

There are two comments I would like to make:

1. the 650 to 700GBs must be mostly data. That I would put into it's own partition. The OS proper should be less than 50GB.

2. Whilst the image is being written, you can hide Macrium and go on using the PC as usual.

Yes it's mostly static data or more precisely game installs. If I could do it all again I would of partitioned for a simpler life. The problem I have is all the installations, patches etc over the years. It's all pointing at C: in the registry so trying to split things up now would be quite problematic I guess. I don't mind doing an image which takes a few hours so long as I know it's going to work and not error right near the end as the Windows one seems to do to me now. I'd only plan on taking an image every month or two as nowadays not much changes on my PC. At the moment I am sweating because I have nothing since the last powered USB drive containing my last good successful image failed. Hopefully, if tomorrow's efforts fail with the new USB HD and using Windows system image, I will be sitting a lot more comfortably with macrium by the weekend. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed until then that nothing cataclysmic happens, now that would really be bad luck!

Cheers, Wayne

One last question

Sorry Wolfgang

One last question. I've downloaded your iso in readiness, thank you for sharing. I've downloaded the macrium installer from File Hippo. Under options it asks if I want to download reflect installer and PE components or just the reflect installer only. Do I need to download the PE components as part of the install? I'm guessing not as you've already supplied the iso? Shall I just opt for the Reflect Installer?

thanks,
Wayne

Hello again,

I went to install it and chose the latest version 5 but when it goes to the setup/downloader page it downloads version 6. Is there anyway I can get version 5? I went to their site and found an installer for version 5 but unfortunately it was not for the free version, it was only for the trial or license version. I was tempted by the trial version but that lasts 30 days after which I presume the software stops working?

I don't mind getting version 6 but creating the winPE recovery is daunting with all the MS SDK kit and over 1 gigabyte download. I noticed the installer for macrium v6 gives option file gives option to download the PE components and warns it's an extra 137 mob. Similar size to your ISO file on your sky drive. Could it be the installer now includes the pre prepared ISO and all it needs now is to burn the ISO without the need for all that MS SDK stuff?

Thanks,
Wayne

Unfortunately that appears to be the case. Still you can install free V6 and make your own pe disc by following the Macrium options. I made a pe 5 to CD as it has USB 3 drivers. The one issue is the CD pe takes quite a while to load for some reason.

I really appreciate Macrium version 6 and all it is capable of. Yet version 6 has dropped the much smaller Linux repair disc found in version 5 which i like to keep on hand and use with folks who want a simpler program.

Filehorse still has the full download of version 5 and here is VirusTotal's scan of Filehorse's site: Scan report for http://www.filehorse.com/download-macrium-reflect-64/20302/old-versions/ at 2016-02-04 08:05:36 UTC - VirusTotal

Here is
their download page for the Macrium Reflect Free Edition 5.3.7299 (64-bit) @ 51MB
Macrium Reflect Free Edition 5.3.7299 (64-bit) Download for Windows / Old Versions / FileHorse.com

whs's
WinPE iso will work with this. And once installed version 5 can create the lighter linux disc.

Hope this helps :)
