How can I make a .iso of Windows 7 Professional

I recently purchased and downloaded the Windows 7 Professional 64bit upgrade, however I am currently running a 32bit version of Vista Home Premium.

I understand (from reading other threads) that it isn't possible to run a custom install, or even update from 32bit to 64bit; without creating an .iso file.

Could anyone help me; I've read through various threads telling me to do all sorts of things, then type "oscdimg -bC:\Users\James\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lWIN_EN_DVD C:\Users\James\Desktop\expandedSetup\ C:\7.iso" into the command promt window.
(Before you suggest checking the file paths etc are correct, yes they are)

However none of this is helping me. Could anyone please either give me a way around having to make an .iso file, or how to actually make the bootable .iso file, which i can either write to a DVD or run straight away.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or solutions.

James

Hello James, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sorry, but you can only do a clean install when going from 32-bit to 64-bit, or the other way around. You can do a clean install with a upgrade version of Windows 7 though.

Just extract the contents of the file to a spare drive/partition and run setup.exe from there... no real need for a DVD at all...

The download's came in three files, Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe (I know that is the one I am meant to run, but when I do so I get the error message; "We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only." (The folders are not read only). There are two other .box files; setup1 and setup2.

And @Brink I was intending on doing a clean install, from Vista Home Premium 32bit to 7 Professional 64bit, but as I said above, I get that error message when trying to extract the files, I can't get past that part.

That is where the file/s were originally, I have moved them to different paths, but they are currently back to the desktop, however I still have the error message if I try to run the .exe file.

Edit: Sorry I misread what you had put, I realise you meant to try save the .iso file to the desktop.

Yes wallyinnc I am logged in and right clicking run as administrator.

After typing
"oscdimg -bC:\Users\James\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lWIN_EN_DVD C:\Users\James\Desktop\expandedSetup\ C:\Users\James\Desktop\7.iso"
into the Command Prompt, it seems to be working, telling me that it is "Writing 874 files in 200 directories to C:\Users\James\Desktop\7.iso" (With the completion percentage)

I will let you know if this works or not, thankyou logicearth.

This worked, I can know see a .iso file on my desktop called "7"
I'm currently burning this to a DVD, then I will try to install it from the disk, as the .iso is not bootable.

For anyone interested; the Command I entered was
oscdimg -bC:\Users\James\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lWIN_EN_DVD C:\Users\James\Desktop\expandedSetup\ C:\Users\James\Desktop\7.iso

The underlined parts you will need to change to your username, if the file is actually on your desktop, and the bold part is where you want the .iso to save to.

Thanks to everyone for their help, I will tell you if the disk works, unless anyone knows a way to boot the .iso file?

The .iso burned to the disk fine, using ImgBurn.

However, when I put the disk in, I get an error message, saying;

"This installation disc isn't compatible with your version of Windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. For more information, check your computer's system information. To install a new copy of Windows, restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc, then select custom (advanced)"

I'm going to try what it said now, hopefully, next time i post on here, I'll be running Windows 7. :)

The download consists of these 3 files

Windows 7-HP-Retail-en-us-x64.exe
setup1.box
setup2.box

There is no ISO and the requirement is that you run the .exe file from within Vista or XP.

Its not designed to be made bootable and if it can be hacked to do so, then I bet activation will fail.

Not at all. Its not a hack. And activation is not depended on the media used. I've contently rebuilt the Windows 7 DVD, to and from ISO files, to even thumbdrives.

James, thank you for posting your positive result.
You have to unpack and burn the iso to be able to boot. I use ImgBurn, never let me down. Do at a slow speed.

If one boots from the download files that have been mad into an ISO, you will not be able to activate as it will not accept your key.

Now I could be all wrong on this but time will tell.

You would be wrong. The files themselves are in fact the same files found on the DVDs. oscdimg.exe is part of Windows Automated Installation Kit and is used to make ISOs just for this purpose. Like I said, activation is not depended on the media used.

You could also skip the whole ISO and burning part and put it directly to a USB drive and boot from it.

So are you saying that it is possible to make an ISO from the 3 'Update media files' and then boot and install without having any version of Vista or XP on the drive?

If so .....make life allot simpler.

I wouldn't know what is required to use the upgrade media. But booting from the upgrade media and performing a clean install as always been possible. Before doing the upgrade, you will most likely be required to prove ownership of a previous version.
