Beware KB3139929

I suspect that MS may have quietly pulled the banner after the uproar it created. I'm not downloading any updates until tomorrow after I first make an image. I'll do all of them except KB3139929, make another image, then see what happens after I download and install the little bugger.

I really don't care if it appears only if one goes to msn.com since I never go there; I can't use the site because it insists I have to have ALL my cookies enabled, not just theirs. Ain't gonna happen, no way, no how!

So much for my theory.

Well it seems that we need to only be concerned with "New Tab" page and not opening msn home page in a new tab.

Quote from: Microsoft slips Windows 10 upgrade ads into Internet Explorer security patch | PCWorld

As Woody Leonhard at InfoWorld first reported, this update will supposedly put a blue banner on the IE11 new tab page that says, “Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10.” ExtremeTech points out this is not the same as the blue banner that pops up when you visit sites like MSN.com recommending an upgrade to Windows 10.

That popup appears on any browser if you don't use an Adblocker. I thought it might be exclusive to IE but it popped up in chrome when I disable Adblock. It's only the elusive new tab banner that appears to be linked to the patches.

I know that accords with your normal timetable for installing updates, i.e the Saturday after Patch Tuesday, but I do think this month might be one of those times when it's worth waiting a little longer. I'm personally waiting on at least another Patch Watch article from Susan Bradley at Windows Secrets as well as the further recommendations of Woody Leonhard at Ask Woody. Even allowing for the fact that you're making an image, this seems to be a month that could just turn out to be a real game-changer. As such, I'd prefer caution over backup. Of course, it could turn out to be a damp squib, but only time will tell - and not by tomorrow.

Second desktop different spec but similar level.
In the KB3139929 description it does say that the nag for W10 was only destined for some computers, so MS may have chosen a small group of users for a controlled test. Maybe more than this KB was in play. I am just trying to make sense of why there is no verification of the nag banner after the update. I never use IE, so I do not care, however the significance of the situation is a non-security payload hidden inside a security update. It gives me bad karma.

" Since launching Windows 10, our number-one customer support request has been “how do I get my upgrade?” We’ve been using notifications from the task bar to inform people when their upgrade is ready. We are evolving our notifications to be more approachable and hopefully clear, and will continue to test new things in different markets around the world. This is part of that effort. Users that have turned off the GWX app or disabled notifications in settings will not see this recent change, nor will Windows Professional users." MS spokesperson

Hi, Painter.

I was just about to post about that Register article but you beat me to it.

That could explain why so many people are not seeing the banner. I should be safe since I don't even have the upgrade downgrade updates installed, have GWX control Panel installed, and am running Ultimate on my desktop. I haven't updated my notebooks in a few months (and won't until I need them) but it will be interesting to see what happens when I do since they are running Home Premium, although I do have GWX Control Panel installed on them and haven't installed any Win 10 downgrade related updates.

Antec SX-1240 full tower server / NAS 6TB
I feel all of you on this topic. I'm actually scared as all hell to install any updates anymore. I had to delete, format and reinstall windows 10 like 5-6 times with the same end result. Needless to say I wiped and installed Win 7 from my original disc and everything is great except for the fact I have to screen each and every windows update that pops up. I downloaded the stand alone GWX tool that ICIT2LOL mentioned earlier and am in the process of giving it a go and hopefully works but seems to be doing pretty good. In my honest opinion...Nothing good can possibly come out of Windows 10 from what I had to experience 1st hand and deal with to get my system where I am in control and is running in a stable condition.
