Cannot find "Language Bar" - Windows 7 - American vs. British spelling

I am running Window 7 Pro, SP1.

The spell checker is giving me British instead of American spellings.

I have tried right clicking on the task bar and selecting "Toolbars", but there is no "Language bar" option.

I have also looked at the Control Panel, but there is no "Language" settings option.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forums dddiam!

Click "Start" > Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region/Change the Display language > Change to what you want in the drop down menu > O.K. . You'll have to restart for it to take effect.

I have already tried that. My control panel does not have a "Clock, Language, and Region" selection.

It has a selection for "Date and Time", but that is only for date and time.

It has a selection for "Region and Language", which has a button to change the keyboard language, but not for input language. It only gives a link to a Microsoft information site, which says to select an ILP from Windows Update. (I could not figure that one out. Windows Update only lists available updates).

Thank you. You are the only one who knew about my Control Panel options. All of the other sources (including Microsoft's) document the "Clock, Language and Region" option, instead. I never thought to look in the "Formats" tab. It already was set to the correct language, however. I changed to another language, applied, changed it back, and re-applied. No change to the spelling dictionary however. After rebooting, I do now have a language bar icon on my task bar.

Unfortunately, choosing the correct language did not change my spell-check dictionary. It still has the wrong spellings of the words for my country. (I am in the US, and the spelling dictionary gives me UK spellings).

I tried perusing the registry, but I am not sure what would be the correct entry to try. "HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\Spelling" simply says "(default)".

Could the system be globally using a spell-check dictionary that was installed as part of word processor? Or as part of a browser? Or is the spell-check dictionary global to Windows, itself?

I THINK I SOLVED IT!

It seems that the spelling dictionaries are local to each individual software application.

I separately found, changed and tested the language spelling settings in Libre Office, and in Chrome. They are now each using the correct spell-check dictionary.

I do not know how Microsoft Works is selecting its spelling dictionary, but that is working fine now, also. (Perhaps it always was, and I did not notice).

I will keep this thread open for a few days, in case anyone else has additional comments to contribute.
