How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

I want to try using GRUB to prevent Win 10 from installing on a Win 7 machine (per your post).

As for using Linux, I've been wearing the Tux for 17 years and have several distros loaded. This past year I have gone 90% Linux, only using Windows for specific applications (and never to browse the Internet).

10GB will be fine for what I'm trying to accomplish. And if GRUB2WIN works just like the first Linux version of GRUB (i.e. not GRUB2) but on a Win partition of a MBR drive then I will not even need to load a Linux distro.

Just bought a new hard drive to do this project - formating now!

There is actually an easier way to prevent windows 10 from installing. Just install Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 on windows 7. It won't install until that program is removed. It may start to install 10 but it will stop and ask you to remove it. Then you can cancel the install.

I'm trying to see if there are alternate ways around this problem, not for me but for several others who have reached out to me for help. Telling them to look at installed updates and then review all future updates is not realistic.

So, to give my update...

I installed a new hard drive, formatted one partition as NTFS and a small unallocated section, then installed Win 7 Home Premium SP1 (full retail package).

It took almost TWO days to get the first major round of updates - the only things I left out were Skype and Silverlight, all other recommended and optional were loaded.

I then installed G2Win which is a GRUB booter for Windows.

On day three I started another full day round of updates.

Following that I ran Get Win X from the tray icon...I let it run for TWO DAYS before stopping it. Since then I have left it "upgrading" for another full day...nothing, nada, zip.

So here I WANT to try and get Win10 and can't...go figure.

Convert what's below to a patch and install.

Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Policies -> Microsoft -> Windows. Right-click on Windows and select option to create a new key and name it “WindowsUpdate”. Now right-click on the WindowsUpdate key you just created and select option to create new 32-bit DWORD and name it “DisableOSUpgrade”. Right-click on DisableOSUpgrade and select modify option and change value from 0 to 1.

As stated in the KB article, this one only gets offered if you have one of the previous Telemetry updates installed (KB2977759, KB2952664, or KB2976978), so it hasn't shown up on any of my systems.
If You've skipped those it wont appear.

It's the "details are still being finalised" part I don't like! the sooner they get that nagware off people's systems the better.

If I do ever upgrade, it won't be within this free upgrade period. It'll be when I'm good and ready to. My systems run fine with 7 on. This "free" offer has done nothing to entice me on to Windows 10 yet, in fact it's put me off it a little with the way they've been ramming it down our throats.
If I want it in future, I'll go and buy retail versions, as I did with Windows 7. And if I still don't find it appealing then I'll switch to something else. 2020 is a few years away yet and I'm sure, by that time, there will be other options to consider. Windows 10 might even be something that appeals to me more as it develops over time. But as it stands now, I'm just not interested.

GWX well if anyone missed it I would imagine they already have win-10
So don't worry the telemetry updates are here to stay and probably will be added to Important updates which seem to be getting more and more optional junk in them.
