How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

From my understanding of the telemetry patches in windows 7, they don't become active unless Customer Experience Improvement Program is turned on. So you at least have a choice in Windows 7 to disable it or enable it.

The only thing the June update rollup does include is the latest Windows Update client. Which some may choose to avoid, if they want to completely avoid anything 10 related.

Not true unfortunately, you can test this by setting up VM's yourself. Install a firewall in the VM and turn on verbose alerts. You'll see after you install the patches that even with CEIP turned off the processes Appraiser and CompatTel are frequently requesting Internet access. KB2952664, which was the first of these telemetry patches to be pushed out, is the main culprit.
That was also the patch that caused my main PC to have excessive disk thrashing, even with CEIP turned off.

Once I had uninstalled the patch my disk went back to normal and no Appraiser or CompatTel tasks continued to request internet access and the files were also removed. So, the processes are still running even when it's switched off. As to what data is being transferred though, I have no idea.

But the privacy issue isn't my main concern with those, that's been completely overblown if you ask me. The constant disk thrashing was my initial reason for removing and rejecting these telemetry patches, and why I added them to my list. I won't have any update installed which negatively impacts my systems. Also, that patch is described as collecting telemetry with regards to the 10 upgrade, and as I won't be upgrading any of my systems to Windows 10, I find them completely unnecessary. Just more processes running that aren't needed.

Yes, that may happen if you don't have all the telemetry patches installed. I did a clean install of windows 7 32 bit and used the roll-up updates. I still keep off the stuff that would install windows 10 with the exception of Windows update update. I even blocked it with never 10. However, I think Microsoft issued an update that fixed that telemetry issue but can't confirm it yet. Actually, I wouldn't mind Microsoft knowing I still use windows 7. You said there was a way to test it out, what firewall did you install?

Hi Groze, sorry for the delay. I was on holiday and it's taking me a couple of days to get back into the swing of normal daily life again!

You can use any firewall as long as it gives you details about what's connecting and to where. I use Comodo, just the firewall installed without the bloat, although that's probably not the best one to use in a VM environment, as it can be a little heavy on resources. As long as you allocate enough resources to the VM for it to run well.

It is possible they've improved those telemetry patches, I haven't really tested them for a few months now. It seemed to be running all the time on my system, although that patch has been reissued around 20 times so they might have fixed it by now. If you set one up, let me know the outcome, as I'd be interested to see if it still runs often.

I had a look at Windows update just now for the first time since January the first.

All the hidden updates have disappeared. I now have 96 important and 58 optional updates waiting.

Laptop runs fine and is very old. I think I just won't bother for at least an other week. Listen to what other members find out.

There is still a free upgrade 10 for those that use assistive technologies. I think proof should be required though. However, maybe its do to laws like HIPPA, Microsoft can't ask for proof.

My opinion, I think it is better to get a new computer if you use assistive technologies & I'm not sure I would use a windows operating system for that.

w10 anniversary now the next menace

Too soon to take off GWX as its not over yet. OK free gone but they are not defeated and best to be prepared by keeping this program. It kept me free of W10 for the year and the Ultimate Outsider says keep on with it or take a gamble.

BTW I also had a lap top with W10 on it tried to get it off and re-install W 7 for owner. No way to format. Cant use media creation tool for W10 as thought keep version in case he wanted it in future on a flash but stymied.
And then crashed through put in W7 disc and it did the deed.
Fired up opened the traditional windows 7 and then went troppo.
Black screen - flashing through corrupt files etc etc and that went on a while then on to orphan files.
and then opened up. Guess.
Yep W10.

So cant get rid of it. I couldnt anyway.

I seriously doubt micro... is going to install win-10 and make people buy it
I'm not at all sure what all GXT control panel does besides blocking... of win-10 stuff possibly it does some of the same things as the telemetry updates from the updates do and just sends the data to the developer and it's partners
