Windows calls KB3193414 update important, but when I click for more details, it just takes me to a page that's an advertisement to buy Windows 10. [https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows] I don't want Windows 10 because I'm still using media center and one piece of hardware I don't want to buy again.

Does anyone know more about this update? When I check MSE, it says it's up to date.

Can you take a screenshot of your windows update? That doesn't seem like a valid update number. Haven't seen that one on any of my systems. Google search doesn't bring up anything for me.

I'm seeing this update too, and the lack of a proper KB article on microsoft.com seems a little odd. It's not the first time that an update has been pushed out before the KB article was available, but personally I've never seen in taking so long.

The fact that there are only a few google search results for some Japanese blogs, and that the official MSE download site lists 4.9.0218.0 (which I do have installed) as the current version, makes me even more suspicious

While I could imagine that as a possible cause, ie multiple languages installed, therefore you receive a locale specific update (earlier than others), I do not have any additional languages installed, let alone any chinese or multi-language packs, and the lack of a KB article is still suspicious to me, I mean, people over in China like some technical details too, don't they? :)

Also the linked thread in the chinese MS support forums doesn't seem to prove any validity... could the KB article possibly be region restricted?

I can't see how anything malicious can be pushed through Windows Update, but you may want to hold off for a few days until somebody can confirm what it actually is.
If you download MSE directly from the site, what is the latest version number?

I´ve heard it has something about PC´s that have more than one language installed. It´s intended for the Chinese language, but for some reason Microsoft put it and my PC (I´ve got English and Spanish installed and I can go back and forth). Also, seems like it updated all by itself too. I did not give it permission. Kinda like a Windows 10 thing last year. Microsoft! Geez............

This update removes Scan via MSE from right click menu on files :( http://s20.postimg.org/oj17k04a5/screenshot_240.png (this is gone) . So do not install this now and wait for more informations from Microsoft!
Correct, it does remove the scan file(s)/folder(s) option from Explorer's right click context menu.

Before this update:
MSE 4.9.218.0.PNG

After this update:
MSE 4.10.205.0.PNG

"Send to" work around:
MSE bat.PNG
This work around works for entire folders too. Right click on the file of folder of interest and "send" that file or folder to the batch file mentioned below.

Create a batch file with these two lines:
Code:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\MpCmdRun.exe" -Scan -ScanType 3 -File %1
pause
Scans a single file or single folder.

Or use these two lines in your batch file:
Code:
for %%i in (%*) do "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\MpCmdRun.exe" -Scan -ScanType 3 -File %%1
pause
Scans multiple files or multiple folders. But you might reach a limit.

Put that batch file in your "Send to" folder.
Code:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

I have seen updates come out with no info.

If you need right click "scan functionality" back you can uninstall MSE and then reinstall again MS has the standalone versions availble. Dont run windows update between otherwise it will throw "Defender" updates at you. kb3193414 will reappear soon afterwards so you can hide it. However heres the kicker theres nothing out there on wether this update is crucial for future updates and/or dependancies and its really up to you if you want right click scan back and how much you want to risk. So if you do youll need to watch for regular MSE updates and if they fail or not :(

@ThashZone
yeah absolutley i just use MSE because its free, regular updates, not a large install, doesent take up tons of system resources and as it turns out not a major trauma to uninstall/reinstall. Hiding kb3193414 may affect future updates/upgrades as many updates have dependancys. Up to now seems fine (2) since reinstalling. Get on over to ********s web site where you can get the latest scuttle/info/ some bitching/the occasional fixs and general do's and donts about WUD. As we are approaching cummulative monthly updates for all systems 7 in oct recent updates are not as reliable as they used to be the recent IE11 update for instance robbed the ability of opening ie11 shortcuts out of iell without a nag msg (ie from favorites) as i normally do. hope this has been of help :)

Thanks everyone for your answers. I'm going to leave it alone and see whether future updates fail to install. If so, I'll unhide this and install it. I appreciate the workaround but it's too much for my skills. I'll bookmard this page though and come back if I need that info. I suppose I could go to another free anti-virus but so far I have no problems with MSE.

I installed this update back on the 27, 3 days ago I ended up uninstalling it and reinstalling the prior version of MSE because for some unknown reason MS removed on demand scanning with this new release of MSE
In other words they removed "scan with Microsoft Security Essentials" from the right click menu or context menu and there is no way to add it back in using the registry. I don't know what there game is except to try and force people into buying windows 10 and using the resource hungry MS defender. As of now I have this update hidden so it won't get installed again and if I find I know longer can use MSE I guess I'll have to find another way to protect my system because I refuse to upgrade to win 10. hope this helps

Scans a single file or single folder.

Or use these two lines in your batch file:
Code:
for %%i in (%*) do "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\MpCmdRun.exe" -Scan -ScanType 3 -File %1
pause
Scans multiple files or multiple folders. But you might reach a limit.

Put that batch file in your "Send to" folder.
Code:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

I have seen updates come out with no info.
In a day or two, this link might have some info:

Thank you for the work around even though I didn't install the update it's still nice to have this info I created and tested the bat file and it works really just as good as the other way if not a little faster because there is no GUI to slow down the scan
