Windows 7 End of Support

This is old but worth looking at-

It doesn't discuss how One Drive keys are maintained by Microsoft.

I am a completely spinnerless build. All SSD's here. How would W10 keep my drives 'spinning at all times'? Oh, wait... it wouldn't. OK sorry, disregard. LOL!! <just being a little sarcastic here, folks>

We're all being peed upon, and pooed too. This has been a known issue for years.

MS started data collection with Win7. As I adopted 7 late in its life, I was aware of which updates not to install. That's why we use Simplix or Dism++ to install past updates, because they skip the bad ones.
The problem has continued into Win 10.

@z3r010, you're a longtime member, and you should know about this.

Mozilla started doing it with Firefox too, but that's another issue.

so he does not only not want to admit he knew it was spy wear, but he as well makes very abusive comments which tells us some other things about him as well, which is too bad, care taking is harder then understanding any computer and more important
So Mr RoWin and I know this is a low blow, but his avatar might possible look sneaky, though I think my avatar may be worse with deeper implications .
please list all one might do to get ones privacy back from the stalkers at MS, which is what it is.

Been having a ponder about my next laptop, you know, when the time comes which hopefully won't be for a while. I've never looked at having an Apple laptop as a way of escaping MS W10. Anyone know if Apple use telemetry? Could I install MS Office 7 on an apple laptop or would they not talk to each other?

Answer is "probably" (even if they don't admit it!)

Could I install MS Office 7 on an apple laptop or would they not talk to each other?

There are versions of Office that are specifically for masOS - you can't simply install the Windows version on a mac - it won't work.

You CAN create a separate partition on a mac to run Windows - research 'Parallels' or 'Bootcamp' and you can then install your Windows version of Office in that partition, switching between macOS and Windows as required.

Parallels is a 'paid-for' solution - costing £69.99 for Home & Student use - link here

Bootcamp is included with macOS and is thus free - however it is a tad 'buggy' on occasion - link here.

This link is for a comparison between Parallels & Bootcamp

Hope this helps,

Zaph

I personally believe that there are a lot of Windows, Linux and Apple users who are totally unaware of what telemetry is and what it does...

Without a telemetry feedback no modern complex system would be able to operate, Cars would drive off the highway, where they would be hit by the planes falling from the sky, as buildings collapsed around them.

Telemetry is an information stream that allows a system to react to changes in it's environment, nothing more. nothing less,

for example the steering response on my car changes dependent on the speed I am travelling ... at 55 MPH turning the steering wheel a set radius, will cause the steering to deflect by a different radius than it will at 150MPH or at 25 MPH - this allows the driver to predict the response of the Machine/Device, ( or lets just call it a Car).

Taking away the telemetry will simply remove all control from the steering system, and it's then a case of saying hello to the weeds, hopefully at a survivable velocity.

In a computer system the activities of the user sends a different set of telemetry, BUT it is STILL just a stream of unidentifiable data that is also used to control the output of the "machine" involved. Such as where the cursor is ... what is the current page position... which ISP are you connecting to the Internet

Lets be honest Here, I do not think that Microsoft cares what data I have on my systems or those of clients I manage, or on any other user on this forum, Not even z3r010 who is of course a long standing member of the forums,

AFTER ALL HE DOES OWN THEM!! :sarc:

If microsoft did want a specific set of user data , they could get it simply enough, just do what all the governments and others do - Buy it from one of the Many large Internet Service Providers, or search engines, or the open book called Facebook

Then there is the difference between telemetry and telemetry.:D:D
and most importantly what they do with all the data they collect.

If you read all user agreements and their data policy word for word from beginning to end, some companies are more frightening than others. Facebook, google, microsoft, apple, amazon etc etc.
Facebook sells to anyone who wants to buy and has the money
Google not quite as aggressive but not far off. (my opinion)
Microsoft .. yes with win 10 I'm not 100% sure, but they begin to walk the same path as google... so I avoid it.
Apple is pretty hard on keeping things within the company. (so far)

Personally, I have nothing to hide on my computers(I don't even encrypt my computers), but since I stand for our data is our own if they want their data to be theirs(as they are so against open source), so I boycott most companies because the words "personal privacy" means just private, that my data is mine if theirs is theirs.:-)

If everyone were to refuse win10 and google etc until they change their collection policy, then companies would only have two choices. Go bankrupt or give it up to get customers back.
The biggest problem with that strategy is that only a small fraction of the world's population cares, for it to be effective:(

I boycott companies as best I can. I have no google account, no apple account, no microsoft account and so on.. I have many of their data collection servers blocked in my hardware firewall.
It's a struggle, but it may be worth it in the end.. than that it maybe in the future, everything is online and in everything we own and say is in their possession :zip:

Who knows... his may be the start of the new global revolution. Hahaha:picnic: :roflmao:

Sorry for the off topic :grouphug:

I can't fit all info on all my computers in these fields :-D
I do have an advantage of experience with the subject of Telemetry In Computerised systems. For many years i earned part of my salary from working on the setting up and some design of such systems. I was also the IT systems Administrator for the company I worked for and was seconded to the department that needed me most, at the time.

The system was not interested that a piece of data that formed part of a Telemetry stream was a particular word, except where that word, (A word in this case of course referring to a set of Eight Bits, that was used as a set of eight switches used to control software and eventually some form of hardware). This data was utilised to set switches based on multiple inputs and outputs.

In a User control system as is seen in Microsoft operating system Products, it is important that Microsoft or any developer, understands what is the most likely range of data that the user will enter into the system, this is a simple matter to Count the number of times certain key data sets appear in the telemetry and thus know what to expect to see generally so that the system can be fine tuned to run most efficiently, and serve the needs of the user most closely.

The fact that a particular word, (this time as a group of characters in a set order that is human readable), is is present is irrelevant as data it is just a way of tuning the system to it's most efficient -

think of a simplistic spell check system, on a system where the words "apple, expensive and underpowered" often appear in a sentence together, if the user misspells one of the words it is likely, to a certain extent, that the misspelled word word will be one of the expected words - the system will of course use multiple iterations of the same check and similar sets to work out the actual end result. -

There is then the question "why does Microsoft need to "read" all this data, (which is basically not true as a telemetry stream will contain just a sample set of the words used, in a non human readable format). The data is read by Microsoft as they can then utilise the most powerful available processing option to accelerate the job at hand, the wider the amount of data checked results in the overall accuracy of the suggested spelling correction being improved

It does not make much sense to calculate the likelihood of any particular word being used on a specific laptop on a specific desk somewhere in the world - It does make more sense to look at a large amount of data from all over and use the powerful servers allocated to this task, working out what is the most likely word to be missing / misspelt and then feeding this data back into the software.

I have no problem with telemetry if I get the choice to participate or not.
Sometimes I choose to send telemetry information if a program has crashed, as it maybe can be bugfixed.

What I read at the beginning of win10 release (2015or2016) datacollection policy which made me never want to get win10, it said: (taken from memory, so I can not quote word for word) "we can see what files you have on your computer. We can activate your webcam and your microphone, etc. "this because they are participating in something to fight crime. Yes it's good to fight crime, but all innocent people then?
This is not telemetry, it is illegal wiretapping. That's probably why win10 got the nickname win10spyware

So that's what I mean by 'there's a difference between telemetry and telemetry. :D

hmm, maybe a new thread would be created for this topic instead of writing in this EOL thread. :geek:
The subject is very interesting and also relevant if people want to know how to avoid telemetry, and if they are in need of it or not.

The cortana situation is different from OS telemetry as any high level system such as Alexa, Google Home, Siri, or cortana, by its very nature needs a certain level and type of feedback to work will always be a matter of choice for the user, If you use the functionality then you have to accept the "price" for it's use is some additional data usage.

My choice out of the list I gave is Google Home, why? because it works the way I do and I have the hardware in place

I am an Android device user for my portable devices, where a voice operated OS is a practical option, so Google is already integrated into my system, I have a number of Google Home Screens and speakers around the flat which means I can access information as I move around at the cost of some data transfer I have no issue with this, none of the data is financial or personal but none of the others run on my systems, none of my PC's or Laptop run Cortana, it does not meet my needs so why waste time or space on it? same for the other options.

Annotation 2020-09-13 135555.png Oooh Look No Cortana ;)

Apple products are of no use to me, they produce phones that give me a chance to get all nostalgic, seeing all the functionality that I had on my Android phone from several years ago ...

I often wonder how apple get away with calling a feature that is available on old android phones is a Unique iPhone feature, but they do it all the time. Of course they have a protected market in the US, but in worldwide sales they are no where near as popular as android
