Windows users face massive update bloat, tough choices

If only the security package is installed through the website, the package of patches this month will continue to display on the WU ? Since it contains other non-critical patches and then not being installed will still be shown as a patch available(5330).

Yes, it will still display that months "Security Quality Update" in WU.

The naming of the updates doesn't help matters.

The Security-only quality update should just be called a security-only update (omitting the quality), and the Security Quality Update should be called a Security AND Quality update.

Also, we have the "Preview of Security Quality Update". Which is a preview of next months recommended updates before they get rolled into next months full package.

I do not know why they came up with that. When he finished offering W10 was supposed to all be back to normal. It was fine as before. They forgot the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

100% agree!

MS logic is that they want to make it easier for people on clean installs, so they just install one patch, then be up to date.
This won't make a difference though unless they've fixed the slow update scans on a new install.

Unless they fix that, it'll still take hours!

Although this change is uncomfortable for some (myself included), the idea is good as you say for those starting from scratch.

Instead of seeing 100 or 200 patches now it will be seen for months and well packaged. But the dilemma is that there is a patch causes a conflict for certain PC settings. If it is urgent to fix the solution is more harmful because it would imply uninstall the entire package and be exposed to security risks.

Yep, for people who want to get up to date quickly, and not skip updates - it's a blessing. They would still have to install a couple of patches in advance to get WU working properly though.

For people who want to pick and choose patches as before - it's the total opposite and will take a LOT more work.

What are you thinking to do Brds7t7 ? Support for W7 ends in 2019. I can tolerate as everyone here have a list of patches are not installed but they are all as optional or recommended. But see the Windows update that is pending to download the "security package" (plus extras) is another matter. As to no longer sleep peacefully, like right now XP

I do not know. I think give in to this change because right now my mind is on other things that added to all this is already a lot. Some here have already installed packages and so far so good. Except a user who had to uninstall it by finding certain problems :

Anything undesirable in KB3185330 or KB3188740?

At the moment I'm sticking with the security-only packages and will consider my options for later down the road. I won't be installing these fully cumulative updates though. And I've kept all past patches in a pack for future installs.

I have no intention of moving to Windows 10 at the moment. I'll continue to use 7 until 2020 then carry on with 8.1 for a while.

These patches are not for security included in the package are the "recommended" ? If it were so, even changing the option of "not receiving the recommended along with importants" would not help prevent that. That option would no longer have any function.

According to MS there will still be some separate updates which MS classes as "out-of-band" updates, so the option could still have some function. This will only really apply to people who have their updates set to automatic install anyway. It won't really make any difference to users who have their updates set to "check but don't download".

I can't find a "September Security only update".
Was there one ?

No, I was just using it as an example. The Security-only rollups only started this month.

Thanks Brds7t7 I'll start a collection from October.

I have just finished building a USB installer for Win7x64 with slipstreamed all (relevant) updates till September. Including Xhci and Ehci with Nvme drivers.

If I am understanding this thread correctly. How far back do the Monthly roll-ups that you get through windows update go back?

On a side note, it also makes belarc advisor useless at least for updates.

I have done a clean install of Windows 7 using Dell re-installation disk (Dell sent me one). I also use Free Macrium reflect backup and restore.

For Windows 7, I think the first one was the May 2016 Rollup. The October rollup was the first one under the new windows update policy.
