Windows users face massive update bloat, tough choices

After re-reading the article & comments. It will only download what you need. I just did a refresh of windows update. The October 2016 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is only 72.6 MB

I don't know why Microsoft used the word preview though.

There are 3:

1) Security-only Quality Update

2) Security Monthly Quality Rollup

3) Preview of Security Monthly Quality Rollup

Isn't the Security only quality update only available through windows catalog?

I thought number 2 was suppose to be called November 2016 roll-up update, like previous roll-ups.

Why would you want a preview? I take it the preview is beta software then.

I am totally lost. I read them again & the links as well.

Here is what I understood originally.
You get a monthly security updates that is only available through windows catalog.
You get a monthly roll up which includes the above security updates via windows update.
You get a monthly roll up of Microsoft Net if needed via windows update.

So why all this extra stuff?

Because Microsoft has a bunch of cowboys and hay hands in charge of naming these various updates and because they aren't particularly interested in all things Windows 7. Plain speaking and English comprehension are in short supply at MS.

You can:

1: remain subservient, shut up and live with it

2: move to Windows 10

3: move to Linux

4: disregard all updates

5: move to Macintosh

6: depart computers entirely

I'm sure I'm leaving something out, that's just my first pass at trying to make sense of it. My first mistake was thinking it could possibly make sense to me, a mere mortal home user.

Yep I haven't touched win-10 in so long it is silly to have it on a 500gb ssd
Might transfer it to a 120gb ssd soon enough or a hdd.

It appears to be a 120,5Mb patch for x64bit based system.

Plus, you'll have to go in Registry settings:

By default, on Windows 7 SP1, support for sending usage and diagnostics information through an authenticated proxy is not disabled (0x0), and the Diagnostic and Telemetry service will impersonate a logged-on user to authenticate with the proxy to send information. You can configure this behavior by using the following registry subkey:

1. Locate and then select the registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection
2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

My annoyance with microsoft and this telemetry business of theirs is at an all time high, so I've downloaded and installed this update below, does this mean the two updates above are not needed or do I need to install those two as well?

This update nonsense is making my head spin as I'm sure I've got it wrong, I could do with some guidance from you more knowledgable members of the forum, so feel free to chip in with your update strategy as mine seems to be full of confusion at the moment.

I'm annoyed at microsnot Microsoft for putting me in this position and am seriously thinking of installing Linux and be rid of this whole microsoft update business forever.

I just set my update settings like this and load what ever Important updates that show up after creating a system image to a totally separate hard drive
After I shut down and disconnect the other hdd and restart and load the updates.
Then none can harm me
The Optional section I pretty much ignore unless they address a issue I'm having.

It's like old vintage cars you'll not be able to find easily parts to have it original. Microsoft is evolving despite consumer desires. I just don't get it that they want telemetry on a based system that will end within little few years. I still hide some of the kb articles related to the upgrade.

10 has some interesting policies especially existing hardware and software
They can stop supporting hardware whenever they choose too
Software is removed without notice as not compatible anymore
I believe that has happened to Classic shell users....

I thought the classic shell issue was fixed. Simple workaround unless Microsoft fix that, is to rename the executable for installation. Spybot S&D both old & new get uninstalled as well. Spybot 2.x made a desktop re-installation shortcut if that happens, plus you now have to disable defender on-line scanner for Spybot to work. This applies to windows 10.x
