Hello all you Windows 7 fans, I ran it for several years and then I made the mistake and took the free upgrade to Win 10.

After several months of problems and Microsoft support techs remotely tried to fix and try to get mt system working again in the windows 10 OS I have something of a mess a bit of 7 and a lot of 10 on my system.

Id decided to go back to Win 7, when I made the decisions to go back to 7 I bought a 480GB SSD and a new graphics card. What I was trying to do was to have a completely clean empty SSD that all I will install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on it.Most of the rest of my system Mobo, cpu etc. are relatively new.

The only thing I am unsure about is when support ends for Windows 7, I read things about extended support ending in Jan, 2020 I read others saying it is already toast done caput,, I also bought a newer graphics card,

EVGA GeForce GT 730 4GB DDR3 128bit Dual DVI mHDMI Graphics Cards 04G-P3-2739-KR

So can someone tell me if Win 7 is good unti Jan 2020 or done now????

I can't fit my system build in my signature so I will have to remember to add it to the end of each message in case someone needs to know what I have.

Windows 7 is good til 2020.

We will all have a party when they stop updates for windows 7, you don`t even need half of them.

Why can`t you fit your specs in the required area, no one else has any trouble doing it.

You`re putting too much in each items description, just put what you have, that`s it.

Intel Core i7 4790K @ 4.4 GHz
Asus Z97-A
Corsair CX750
Corsair Vengeance 32 GB @ 1600 MHz
EVGA GT 730

etc

You don`t need all that other hoo haa you`re adding to each components description, but put what fits.

And a EVGA GT 730 ??? Seriously, the 4790K has better graphics.

I guess you never clean installed 10 ?

Jan 2020 it is, but................................

Your possibly bigger issue is coming to terms with Windows Update for Windows 7.

It's pretty much a confusing mess.

You have to decide what you want to accept from Windows Update, what to decline, and hope that you can differentiate between the two.

I've decided to accept ONLY security updates, but MS is not doing a good job of explaining and packaging that.

Exactly, I just did an install on a HP, only installed the 1st round of security updates, after that every recommended or important update has to be gone over to see if you even need it.

There are so many updates that you don`t need.

Russian Ruble, South Sudan added to locations etc :roflmao:

I will create a list of all the updates I just hid when I get a minute and post it.

And make sure you do what Mike says to do in reply #2 to have Windows update work perfectly.

Windows Update will not update and I've tried multiple fixes

The only other choice I have is to buy a New Windows 10 for $200 when I don't like it, too buggy

You do not have to buy W10, if you already upgraded to it from W7 during the free upgrade period then you have a digital license, all you have to do is clean install W10 and click skip when it asks for a key.

It will auto activate when you get online.

What do you mean fix it ? There`s nothing wrong with it.

Just customize it how you want and you`re set.

I use it everyday now, it`s just another Operating System :)

I've got $5 in my pocket that says I'm older than you.

I said WHICH updates. You'll be offered a bunch. You can just bend over and take all of them or you can try to pick and choose.

Reasonable people differ as to which "should" be installed. The path of least resistance is to bend over.

Don't expect a lot of clearcut plain English help from Microsoft.

You might get clues by reading threads on this website. Or you might just bend................

yes I know of that digital license but I find it to me a mess and would rather have a new disk and a key code so I chose to buy a new copy of Win 10

As determined by who?

Windows 7 is used by over twice as many people as Windows 10. No one knows how long that will continue.

Most people who just go out and buy a new PC will get Win 10. Some will be satisfied and some won't. Apparently you weren't.

You personally have to evaluate your dislike of 10. If you can't stand it, then you have no choice but to use something else.

So what is the best thing to do??????

As determined by who?

Windows 7 is used by over twice as many people as Windows 10. No one knows how long that will continue.

Most people who just go out and buy a new PC will get Win 10. Some will be satisfied and some won't. Apparently you weren't.

You personally have to evaluate your dislike of 10. If you can't stand it, then you have no choice but to use something else.

So just to be clear, are you or the others telling me that staying with 7 and then only installing security updates. Win 7 lets you control which updates that are install so that should be easy enough.

Is that the overall opinion of most who know what they are talking about???

You do not have to buy W10, if you already upgraded to it from W7 during the free upgrade period then you have a digital license, all you have to do is clean install W10 and click skip when it asks for a key.

It will auto activate when you get online.

What do you mean fix it ? There`s nothing wrong with it.

Just customize it how you want and you`re set.

I use it everyday now, it`s just another Operating System :)

yes I know of that digital license but I find it to me a mess and would rather have a new disk and a key code so I chose to buy a new copy of Win 10

Why ? You could put that money towards a real graphics card.

Exactly, never have windows set to auto update, and as I already said, you read the More Information option over on the right side of the windows Update window to see the description of each update and whether you even need that update.

I'm telling you that's what I'm doing. Nothing more. I haven't taken a poll about what others are doing.

Regardless, in Windows 7 you DO have a lot of control over what updates to accept.

BUT BUT BUT, you will NOT have an easy time deciding which you should accept if you go through them one by one because you will be offered hundreds over time and the explanations for accepting them are often unclear.

There is a monthly "security only" single one-item update and that's what I've decided to go with. I am hiding and declining ALL other updates until and unless I decide "security only" updates are a bad deal.

Yes, that's not the way I'd like things to be, but I have to deal with Microsoft or buy an Apple or go to Linux.

I agree Ignatz, some of Microsofts description of an update can be very vague.

I've decide to buy another Windows 10 pro for $200 even though I know I have some digital license because upgraded from win 7 to 10

BUT<<<<<< I chose to buy a new copy with a disk and key code>>>>>>>>> I appreciate all who are trying to save me money but I have tried to fresh install win 10 with the DL but it was a mess. So I would rather spend $200 and be sure of what I have. So for those trying to help me please keep in mind I chose to buy a new win 10 Pro disk and key code from the Microsoft store.

I also know there are other places that sell it for much less but I read all kinds of issues with not being able to activate so that is why I will spend the $200 at the Microsoft store.
'
Thanks for those who want to save me money but I had to explain why I am doing what I am doing
