Hi,

I have completely deleted the My Pictures folder (C:\Users\Me\Pictures), and I cannot restore this "special" user folder.

How can I?

Hello Hatter the Mad, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If it's still in the Recycle Bin, then you can just restore it from the Recyle Bin. If not, then you can type shell:My Pictures in the Start Menu search box to restore it. You may need to restart the computer afterwards to full apply.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks for the reply! I have done that, but it is not renaming itself to "My Pictures" or restoring the icon

What is it doing instead? Could you also post a screenshot of it as well?

It just looks like a regular folder, called "Pictures". However, it does act like the user shell folder (i.e. when you right-click you can set its location). It just doesnt have the correct icon, nor rename itself to "My Pictures"

Did you try to manually recreate the user folder by chance?

Try OPTION TWO for the Pictures folder in the tutorial below to restore it's default location, then restart the computer. You may need to restart a couple of times though.

If this does not help, then please post a screenshot of this folder and it's location to help determine what may have happened.

An easy way to restore a shell folder like My Pictures is to copy an empty one of the same name from another user, even if you have to create then later delete that other user. In the local copy, go to Properties and make sure Location is what you want. Anyone see a problem with this solution?

Hello Dave, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sorry, but I see a problem with doing that. That may not fix all registry and attribute issues if any for this. :(

Using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below will cover all known usual issues for this.

Hi!

As my username suggests I'm in a bit dire straits!!!  I've tried the "shell thing" and I'm having the same issue as Hatter The Mad on 25/10/09 at 19:46.

I don't want to turn my laptop off in case I lose my pictures completely and totally.

What might have been the cause of this? I wasn't doing anything abnormal when the issue ocurred on my laptop. Is there anything I can do to prevent the problem occurring again in the future?

I'm not keen to download anything new to my laptop to help me with the solution but is this possible?

The "shell thing" has worked but I just can't get it to stay. Is there a so called "finishing off" move I need to make?

Thank you in advance for your help. :)

Hello, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

To be safe, make a backup copy of your pictures to another location.

You'll need to restart the computer after doing OPTION TWO above to finish applying.

Hi Brink!

Thank you for the welcome. :)

Yes I looked at that. I don't want to have to download anything new though. There has to be a solution where I don't have to do that right?

I still don't understand how this problem occured in the first place. How do I prevent it from ever happening again?

Um I don't know how to make a backup copy of my pictures. Can I do that from the "shell version" yes?

You just copy and paste your pictures to another folder not on the same drive or partition as windows. (and verify)

A backup is just a duplicate of what you already have.

And some advice, if I may, you should not be storing any data on your C partition (Windows) that you fear to loose.

Depending on if the issue is the same, it could of happened by mistakenly dragging and dropping the folder to another location.

The .reg file downloads in OPTION TWO below will only restore the default location of the folder and nothing else.
