So Calif
I restored my win 7 system to an earlier date, which usually works fine. (at least on my Dell desktops.)
My Compaq laptop was purchased new but no restore disc was included. I have had a number of Win 7 complaint problems, but now the screen is so dark it can only be seen in a completely dark room.
Thank whoever for Windows XP pro on my two Dell desktops. They never fail to the point that I cannot restore them.
Is there a restore cd for a Compaq laptop with windowz 7 home premium.

On the Compaq/HP's that I've seen there was a "one time" procedure to make the backup discs. If you didn't do it and if you can see the screen enough to do it, the procedure may still be there.

There are "recovery" partitions on some to restore from the recovery. Check HP for the specific model and see if that is an option.

You say the screen is dark, that is usually not an OS problem. Reinstalling probably will not fix that. Its most likely a hardware problem, considering the age of the PC.

Ill check that out Megahertz07, thanks

The dark screen was taken care of by one of the options for something(normal function)?
I still cannot even paste or drag, install, folders or shortcuts on the desktop. Damn I despise winjoke 7.
XP was the very last great OS from MS. Never will I trust MS.again.

I do thank you all for your input tho.
As soon as I can find a way to format 7 and install XP Pro on the laptop, worries are over!
At 80 years I will never purchase or learn another OS.

That may not be possible. XP requires XP specific drivers for some of the devices, including sound. Sound is handled different in XP than it is in Vista/Win7/Win8/Win10. If there are no XP drivers for the hardware, don't even attempt to install XP as it won't work.

I am a "Florida Retiree" and 79. I have no problem with new OS'. My current system is Win 10 Pro, however I have hardware that is Win 10 compatible.

What you MAY be able to do with the Laptop, if you don't want Win 7 (and many consider it an excellent OS and won't upgrade to Win 10) is install Linux. Drivers for all the hardware should be available for Linux.

If your screen is dark then either you have the brightness turned way down in windows or on the monitor, or the monitor/screen is bad.

That`s no fault of Windows 7

Thats what the ease of Access GUI is for.

Additional brightness sounds non keyboard etc its on ALL versions of W7

there are free w10 licences available for people with such issues
I think the only exception is for people aged 79:p

As you are determined to install XP on this machine, the first thing you should do is make a disc image (full hard drive backup) of the current OS installation. Then, when XP does not work you can easily "fall back" to Win 7.

I thank all of those who followed it. My choice is clear, it will still be XP for me. It is all I need or want. I am not happy with windoz 7 at all or a laptop. Why does not matter to anyone but me. I have no interest in 7, 8,9,or10.
I will continue with XP pro. on my 2 Dell GX620. Thank you and good night.

Well it is disappointing to hear you give up that easy mate I am just on 70 and I use 7 and 10 all the time XP was good but seeing it has no more support and is a very clunky system there is no way I would go back to it. Sounds ot me like you never gave it a real try:huh:

Yes well my friend when you do get around to using 7 and sadly it is not going to be around for as long as most of us want it to be - in that no support is an inevitability - then just come back and I think that once you start using it it does become so much easier and I think you will appreciate it. Now if you were going to 10 then yes it is a world apart from XP and it has taken me some time to adapt from 7 to it as I am not that technically savvy to be honest, but there is always plenty of help here and for that matter the Ten Forum.

Just a an afterthought why not get a new drive and try a dual XP/7 boot then you have the best of both worlds. That way you use the XP on boot up or if you were feeling like giving 7 another go then direct the boot to 7.
Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP it is an interesting exercise and I find for us oldies keeps us on our toes;)
I have one machine currently dual booting 7 and a Linux based OS called Zorin and it can be quite good fun - again something us oldies are thought not to enjoy anymore - even if it does take us out of a comfort zone which is good for keeping the mind active mate because if you are like me the mind is being let down by the joints etc LOL!!. Doesn't cost much to do it eh?;)
John:)

Why would anyone buy Recovery discs off Ebay for $150 and most likely get scammed, when they can buy Windows 7 Pro from Newegg for $139.99 ????

And why would anyone want recovery discs for that price off Ebay when you could simply call HP ??

And if they did have them they would be way cheaper.

WHY didn't you simply provide a phone number to HP for him , and this 'way cheaper' price ?

WHY would he need a new Win7 cd why would anyone spend $139.99 from newegg when he can get a recovery cd from HP at a way cheaper price ???????

Why when I look at ebay are the majority of recovery discs under 10 dollars lol

Well as the OP already (I am assuming here) that he has an activation code for 7 then he can get a free ISO form Heidoc and use that it is just that he doesn't like 7 for some reason. This way it costs nothing.
