Windows 7 Compaq Laptop - No CD/DVD Drive

I'd be more specific in the title...but I do not know how to word it. I apologize if I can't explain it very well, as I'm not very skilled at explaining.
Well anyhow, a few months ago at Christmas I got a new Windows 7 Compaq Laptop. It ran well, and I mainly used it for the internet; however a few days ago I tried to insert a Blank Disc in the drive so I could burn a home-video onto it. However the computer didn't read it. Nothing happened. I went into my Computer and it wasn't there. So I reinserted the blank disc into my mother's computer, which is an XP Computer, and it worked fine. Baffled, I thought nothing of it until today, when I tried to insert a PC game I brought. The computer started up, as though it was going to run - then nothing happened. I went back into My Computer, and no DVD/CD Drive showed up, no autorun...it didn't read the disc.
I'm very confused, as it worked fine on my mum's computer but not mine. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Try going to start and typing devmgmt.msc and pressing enter. Next, click on the arrow next to the column titled: DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Next, right click on the dvd drive which should be titled Compaq... or HP... and select uninstall. Reboot your coputer and let Windows install your DVD drive and try the game again. Make sure to wait until Windwos says that it has successfully installed the device.

I went back to where you said and double clicked on 'hp CDDVDW TS-L633N' (which was what I uninstalled.) This was what it said when I double clicked on it: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Try booting up in safe mode and uninstalling the dvd drive. Make sure to select "Delete driver software for this device" if that option is available. Here are instructions on how to boot into safe mode: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/666-advanced-boot-options.html

This may be worth a try:

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

It applies to XP, Vista, and Win7.

My neighbour just turned up at my door with his HP G54 laptop with this exact problem: code 39, windows cant load the driver for this device because it's missing or corrupt. I've followed all the steps suggested above but none worked, also I followed the steps in this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us thread
but there is no lower limit under that key in the registry and it says if thats the case it wont fix it. Anyone got any other suggestions that might fix this?

He barely knows how to turn the thing on, that's why I have it. It's an HP G54 Laptop, with Windows 7 home. DVD drive does not work, does not show up in MY COMPUTER and has an exclamation mark against it in the device manager. Code 39 etc.
