Windows 10 ready to install preventing Windows 7 updates.

When opening Windows update I am greeted with the message that Windows 10 is ready to be installed and a reboot is required. I do not wish to isntall Windows 10 but do wish to install updates for Windows 7. On reboot Windows 10 does not install but the message remains. Please advise as to how I can remove the Windows 10 message and update Windows 7. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
You might try to power down just hold down the power button on your computer till your machine turns off
Then unplug it from the power source and or remove the battery if using a laptop.
Hold down the power button again for at least 60 seconds to drain any power out of the system..

Then start in safe mode with networking at startup
Safe Mode

There are some windows updates you need to uninstall and kill some gwx services and processes
Which might be easiest to install never 10 or gwx control panel to do that

In addition to the advice already offered, here is a MS update designed specifically to remove the GWX software from a Win7 system

KB3184143
Be sure to download the correct version for your architecture, either 32-bit or 64-bit.

I have not used it or any of the other, "3rd-party" fixes, so I cannot vouch for them.

But perhaps that might help?

Thanks for the help. I have tried the microsoft windows 10 removal update however it seems to get stuck at searching for updates. I turned off the windows update service before running but it appears to have made no difference.

I have now managed to run the update after a reboot, however I still have the Windows 10 is ready to install message in Windows update, preventing windows 7 updates from checking or installing. I tried setting Windows update to update automatically but when I check the update history it returns errors for every update.

Hi,
Usually if that happens all one has to do is right click the windows 10 update and select Hide.
If you can not see the win-10 update change your windows update settings to these and it will appear along with all of the other waiting to download updates


Then use this link to see all of the updates and right click win-10's

I have not installed the control panel yet as I think there must be a way to get rid of the 'Windows 10 update is ready to install' message without installing a third party non Microsoft programme (the problem being on my friend's laptop and not mine). However, it may be a last resort so I will hold it in reserve. I have checked the settings above and Windows 10 update is not shown anywhere in the window to select or any other updates as it says I have to restart to install Windows 10. When I click the 'check for updates' link it says that an exisiting update (Windows 10) has to be installed and system restarted first before I can check for updates.

Hi:

You've already received plenty of robust, expert advice from folks more savvy about this than I am.
So these are just my random thoughts:

Are you sure this Win10 popup is the legit, real one from MS, and not some sort of spoof/fake popup from malware? (Perhaps you could post a screen shot?)

If it is real, then it sounds as if the computer is trapped in some sort of no-man's land with GWX and perhaps other problems with WU (especially if you cannot even install/run KB3184143)?

Have you tried thrash Zone's excellent tutorial to fix the WU client HERE, as suggested?

If that does not fix the issue, then more drastic measures might be need, I suppose.

I'm think it is a fake GWX (Get Windows Ten). To the best of my memory Microsoft stopped offering GWX update (KB) months ago.

A quick google did find a few Fake install screen fakes doing the rounds so this could be the case here -most are harmless but some may have a nasty payload.

I would suggest running a deep full malware scan to be sure

Assuming this returns clear I would suggest that you use the GWX Control Panel to remove any GWX content from the system and then as Microsoft is not running the free update at present simply uninstalling the GWX Control Panel is perfectly safe to do without the old worry of GWX returning

Have run 'Never 10' and still have the same problem. GWX does not appear to be on the pc, it was before but seems to have been removed- Not a virus as I have run CCleaner, Comodo, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware and Spywareblaster. Have also tried the Windows update reset Bats and the message still remains. I went through the list of updates which returned errors when Windows update tried to update automatically and downloaded them individually and installed manually but I would really like to get Windows update working normally. I would attach a pic of the message (Spanish version of windows but basically says 'Windows 10 is ready to install` restart etc.) but only allows a link in the reply. When restarting nothing happens, just boots back into 7 and won't allow to check for updates as an update needs to be installed first.

You'd need to use Go Advanced to see a paperclip icon in the reply editor to attach images to upload
Spanish probably won't help
Use this one to disable install updates on shutdown,

Here is a pic of the message in Windows update (Spanish version of Windows)... Rough translation - The windows 10 update is ready, it is neccessary to restart. If you click check for updates in the left hand pane a message comes up saying something similar to - you cannot check for updates until the windows 10 update as been installed. If I set windows update to automatically check and install updates it returns a list of updates in the update history with error in brackets next to each one. I have downoaded each one individually from Microsoft and installed manually, successfully, after stopping the Windows update service. Rebooting after each installation. I had a problem on my English version Netbook where Windows update would get stuck on searching for updates for many hours at a time and fixed it by stopping Windows update then getting the most recent version of Update agent and installing it manually, then allowing to run until it first found all the updates it then found updates a lot faster at each subsequent check. Would this help in this case?

I have run the most recent Windows 7 Microsoft fixit tool for Windows update. Other than resetting everything such as last check for updates etc. to never, underneath, the Windows 10 message persists.
