Are you saying that I need to do boot media first and then boot into that to create my partition?

Yes.
Preos is where a partitioner restarts into a dos type environment.
Beacuse that isn't possible on your test machine, use boot media.

I tried to create a bootable USB, and it said that I needed Windows AIK, so I went to the AOMEI site and downloaded it from there from the Microsoft link and saved the KB3AIK_EN.iso to my Desktop.

Here is the link:

I then downloaded and run MagicISO and I had to uninstall AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard and reinstall it as per running MagicISO instructions.

How do I get it onto my USB as mounted so it is bootable please?

Your win7 test machine has a few issues. It asked for waik because your winre.wim is not linked to the bcd entry.

You might not need to install waik,, if we can locate your winre.wim.

On second thoughts, just download a copy of my boot media- they already have partition manager and backupper included:


64bit

17514x64.iso

32bit

A23x86.iso

My boot media has internet connection, and I made those a little while ago.

Some programs in them might offer to update. Don't bother, the programs work fine as they are.

It is the best boot media - explorer, browser, audio, ( you can even play videos on youtube ) all windows system recovery tools, Eset antivirus, data recovery, partitioning, installing, disk image and restore, etc.

It looks the same as windows, with a start menu, etc. so you will find your way around immediately.

Connection to onedrive Working fine for me.

As I made those a few months ago, I might have included Partition Wizard (PW) rather than Partition Assists. It doesn't matter as PW is very similar and will do the job fine

I have just tried it again and still no luck. I don't think I have got onedrive on this computer.

It is not on your computer. Onedrive is MS cloud storage where those links point to. It is working fine.

There is such a thing as a onedrive program for those who want to synchronize etc ( I dont have it ). Not required to download from links.

More likely your ISP is having a temporary problem.

I found out the problem.
It would not download in I.E., but did in Firefox, strange.
Anyway I have the ISO file now.
Booting it from the USB gave me a BOOTMGR is missing error.
How do I now get it to boot from the USB please?

Do you think it might be best to reinstall Windows 7 and create a secondary partition at install, then use AOMEI Backupper to image?

You need to format the usb to ntfs or fat32 . You have probably already done that. Then extract the entire contents of the iso onto the usb stick.

No, you would have get all the updates, and reinstall all your programs and settings.

I am away for a few days and will not be back home until Friday.
Could I use MagicISO or somelike to extract the files from the ISO to the USB?
How big will the total files be please?

I don't know if magiciso does that. I use 7-zip. The contents are about the same size as the iso.

I actually used jZip which seemed to work.
I extracted everything into the USB.
There only seems to be two folders with data in, is that correct?
So can I atually boot from the USB now or am I totally missing the point?
I have a vista laptop with me so I could try it on here until I get home on Friday.

The layout on USB should be the same as the iso



The folders shouldn't be empty. Not familiarwith jZip, but if everything was copied correctly, and the usb was formatted correctly, it should boot.

Well I am back home at last, hooray.
My test machine is a 32-bit running Vista and ONLY has drive C:.
I unpacked all the files using 7-Zip from the My Boot Media(32-bit) - A23x86 on a NTFS formatted USB.
I changed the BIOS settings.
I put the USB in and booted the machine.
It said checking disk cancelled and then carried on to boot into Vista as normal.
What have I done wrong please?
