Activation of South East Asia Windows 7 in Europe

Hello Community

About 5 Years ago I bought a Windows 7 Home Premium in Thailand. Now I'm in Europe and wanted to completely re-install my notebook from scratch. I realized that my Windows 6 box says; Distribution and required activation must occur in Southeast Asia. Actually I bought this OS separate from the the Notebook. Nevertheless, the package says OEM.

Now I wonder -before I re-format my HD - if I'll be able to activate this Windows 7.

Or does this not affect me, since the first activation happened in Asia?

I'm thankful for every help.

Hi Traveller99,

MS did issue region specific OS discs, BUT as far as i know, i did do a quick check, these related to the "starter" OS not Home premium:confused:.
Included on the disk theres a GEO Block restriction, Usually because its cheaper.

Any New install, including a repair install, takes the validation process back to the beginning:mad:

I dont believe it will activate, you could speak to MS they might feel generious but don't bank on it

So BEFORE you do anything create a back-up image, of the complete system
Imaging with free Macrium - Windows 7 Help Forums

You said the comp came seperately, did it have an OS installed??
if so there will be a COA sticker attached, or in the battery compartment, stating version and a back-up key
If it does you will NOT be able to use the discs to install, getting you the correct ones is not a problem, but factory reset will be OK.

Dont know why you want to re-install, but if its because its not working well you could try these repair tools
KB947821, and from an elevated command mode sfc /scannow /r
and to get rid of programs use Revo Uninstaller, wouldn't hurt to run the MS inbuilt disk cleaner, if youve not used it before it will take about 1/2hr to complete on shutdown & reboot.

For my records, as i've never seen a Geo blocked Mgadiag before, would you mind posting the results of this please, NO personal info in it

Thank you torchwood.

When I bought the Notebook, it was only installed a DOS. This is usual in Thailand. The shop had to order the Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit. So I installed it one or two days later.

Right now, I let Windows 7 do a backup. I checked all the boxes incl. drive C:. Actually it should be enough.

The OS runs not bad. But I thought a re-install wouldn't hurt.

Hi Traveller99,

thanks for that, nothing glaringly obvious showing up.

Been looking at other Geo locked OS posts, Not seen anyone in your situation.

As i said before, MS are the only people who could/might sort you out with a solution.

Sorry cant be of anymore help.

Thanks again. I called Microsoft. He told me, I have to buy a new license (Windows 10) for about Euro 140. May be I have a chance when I call during the installation when Windows rejects my Product Key.

Kinda unfair, since I used the W7 several Years in Asia.

Update:

I installed Windows 7. For that I let Windows format the drive C: After I input the product key, Windows 7 informed me that I can activate Windows 7 with this key only in South East Asia. I started Windows without the key, configured a proxy to Bangkok (within the LAN settings) and guess what, my key got accepted and Windows 7 is activated.

Legal or illegal, to be honest, I don't care. I travel a lot. This time i thought, it's time to reinstall my notebook. After once activated it should work fine. Otherwise Windows would have complained in the past when I traveled countless times to other areas, Europe as well.

Everything looks perfect. Nonetheless, next time when I have to buy a license for an Microsoft Operating System I'll check if there is a license available which can be activated worldwide.

This is a salesperson (or Microsoft as a whole) clearly trying to scam you, plain and simple. You already have a Windows license, you DON'T have to buy again what you legitimaly own (do you legitimaly own it right? :p)
That's not "unfair", it's completely unethical and possibly ilegal to restrict access to software you rightfully have the right to use.

Nice trick! Although it's a bit disgusting to be forced to use dirty tricks to activate a legal copy of Windows. Anyway, nice to know a new tip in case MS becomes more nasty with their "commercial strategy".
