"Customers in Europe will receive special Windows 7 "E" editions in which the IE browser has been removed and can't be added back using the usual Windows Features control panel. Microsoft will make IE 8 available to those customers, optionally, via a so-called "IE 8 Pack" that will be acquired "via CD, FTP, and retail channels." The "E" editions of Windows 7 will otherwise mirror the normal product editions, and as with other nationalities, they will be offered in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. (The version of Windows 7 Home Premium that's sold in Europe will be called Windows 7 Home Premium E, for example.)"

Microsoft : No IE 8 in Windows 7 for EU

"This issue will not be a problem until the RTM build is released for General Availability on October 22, 2009.

For those who have early access to the RTM build, it should be as simple as downloading a copy of Internet Explorer 8, and place it on external media. Install Windows 7E and then install Internet Explorer 8 or any other browser.

The checking for latest updates, entering the Product Key, and Activation can be done after installing.

We will work with the early adopters, to find any unknown issues, as soon as the RTM is available."

Either way we will know in the EU on Wednesday.

This is one of my biggest peeves. Why is it assumed that open source is always good? To be perfectly honest, without MS creating a standard, the Desktop world would look like Linux, a decent kernel with no standard distributions or actual frontends.

This is one of the reasons Unix never caught on, there was no uniform distribution for business to interact with. You had Posix compliance, but that was all.

Windows created an actual standard that was uniform internationally. This, of course, requires an almost monopolistic standard, but at least we have some form of usability.

Is that a moot point? By the full package, do you mean with a browser? Or are you alluding to an upgrade version?

It was my understanding that the full version of Win7E [OK sans IE8] is on pre-order offer in the EU as from 15th July?

That is not the point. What is the point is this: Why should those of us who are unfortunate enough to reside in Europe have to go through the rigmarole of having to separately install a browser just because a bunch of EU dictats decree that MS (a US-based company) should only release W7 without a browser in this part of the World?

I'm 100% agree with you. It is a shame that Neelie Kroes requires that fron MS, and who are the victims? No... not Microsoft. The European Windows Users.

This is from the IE8 home page .... I dont know whether this will change after the retail version is shipped or not..

I assume he means the Vista version.

This is from the IE8 home page ....

I believe that only applied to build 7000 the beta version. Not the RC version or Win7E.
