It is faster, but it made itself the default browser on both my 7&10 machines without any input from me and now I need to figure out how to turn that off.

make another the default, like I did with the ESR .

Tools>Options>General>Startup then check that one, then 57 should have them unchecked then.

next step, if you want it, go into your folder for 57

Other>Source find the ini sample file, copy it into the root of the program folder

delete the comment section {do not mess with the original, only work on a copy}
Change the one parameter AllowMultipleInstances= from false to true

If needed place a copy of that copy into the Data>Settings subfolders or if you find one already there,
usually three lines, change the AllowMultipleInstances=true if two lines, add the AMI=true line in alphabetical order, usually AMI ends up in the middle. then you can run both after launching ESR First.

If not, just go to any other browser make it the default, there should be a selection box within prefs/options my Chrome, that I only use for YT, always complains about not being the default and Opera has a regular settings dialogue but wants you import bookmarks first. I just find it better to work with 2 or more versions of Firefox to make it simple to work with.

As with all other versions, for some time now, I use www.startpage.com as my search engine. It's private and safe.

I see the word "Google Enhanced" there on Start Page. To me, that spells "not private." Maybe I'm wrong, but I run as fast as I can from all things Google. Nothing suggests Big Brother to me more. Don't let the Silicon Valley techies take over the world.

Startpage uses results from multiple other search engines and essentially "sandboxes" them so you're invisible to the other engines, including Google. It's perfectly safe.

Thanks for the info BlueGuy, I already had a test profile and that one got buggered to and since then I've found that a fresh profile has seemed to unlock the default browser option.

I also had problems on the options tab where the general page wouldn't show and the new profile fixed that to. Once I move a few bookmarks and I have no problems I'll get rid of those two.

I'm setting up a new system with Windows 7 Ultimate, so I thought I'd just as well install the newest Firefox. I downloaded and installed the new Firefox Quantum, 57.0 and so far so good.

It's not so different from my previous version as to throw me any curves.
It does seem to run well though. I'm expecting NO problems.

Installed Firefox 57 / Quantum no probs. Then experienced sluggishness today just as I was reading da Sunday newspapers.

When I investigated the matter, Task Manager showed an errant firefox.exe process grabbing 4,5 GB of installed 6 GB physical RAM.

Have you tried a boot of firefox without any add-ons? - It could be that one of your old add-ons is having a problem with the new design but not enough to completely fail. just to go into a loop that causes a memory leak

With 4 tabs open, I'm nearing 1GB memory usage. I've noticed the new firefox actually is faster now compared to my daily browser driver (my laptop) which didn't give any difference.

If anyone is mourning for their lost extensions in v. 57, I'd like to refer you to

forums.mozillazine.org,

where you can get advice on WebExtensions similar to the ones you lost, or css code to add back some of the functionality of your legacy extensions.

Alternatively, you can switch to FF 52ESR and keep your old extensions till next summer, when many of the extensions will have been ported to the new FF.

I REALLY miss ReminderFox and the folks who made it said they will not do a new version. Not worth it.
Google Calendar was recommended as a replacement. It's not even close.

The Moz utility for substituting other extensions is poorly done, written by Mozilla, of course. But if you post in one of the forums, someone might give you a workaround. Mozillazine has far better help than the actual Moz.org site. I've been using it about 15 years.

Many of the extensions will be ported in the next few months. Meanwhile I'm using the ESR track till next summer, with my add-ons intact.

your explanation looks like PR. If they cared about how their users use the web, they wouldn't have done away with all the extensions and changed the whole UI to a naked look. That's what makes Firefox unique among browsers. Now everyone's scrambling to get back their old look, because THAT'S how Firefoxers use the web. They want customization and they want certain conveniences at their fingertips.

I would gladly give up the extra speed, which doesn't seem necessary on my puter, to keep my 28 extensions and innumerable code tweaks in userchrome.css. And I probably will. It's likely I'll load 54 next year and stay there. I won't move to another browser because the others have NO customization.

The best I can tell Brink has not posted his opinion on this subject.
He did however post a article on the subject. Which he does on most news that may effect this forum users.

To my understanding when Brink post news it's not necessarily his opinion. It's just news for the rest of us to ponder.
I'm quite sure if Brink has a opinion and cares to share it, he will post such opinion.
