Win7 Pro 64-Bit: Update Wervice not running...recent issue

Resetting the date back a few days after turning off Time Synchronisation, doing a restart will allow Windows to Update to the date you reset it too.

When you reset the Time Synch & change the date to today's date, it will display a warning that the Update Service failed & it suggests Try Again, but that results in the same thing.

At least now I can see the Update History that previously was completely blank. There is a serious problem somewhere & it's most likely at Microsoft end, so I suppose we will have to wait for a fix.

When the computer boots up it runs the Windows Update check during the starting up procedure, so this is completely out of the users control. It seems that this is the most likely way this has suddenly appeared.

That's right, the issue is on Microsoft's side... As most of the times e.e

I even remember how in the past some updates caused issues to some computers like high cpu usage (one computer I fixed had that issue due to one of the security updates Microsoft released back then).

Not Working This AM!!!!

Yesterday, I deleted Software Distribution Folder on my 2 PCs and the update worked throughout the day, though I lost the histories.

Now today, on morning boot-up both machines show the red "x" !!

Microsoft needs to address this now.

Again, got the red x this AM and ran check for updates...

Check for updates resulted in a ton of old hidden updates. Took me 2-3 hide update attempts before they went back into oblivion.... with the exception of Silverlight!

Can't seem to get rid of the Silverlight optional update. keeps coming back and back.. any ideas??

Good luck everyone...we will see what happens tomorrow!

When I bring up Control Panel --> Windows Update, all that happens is an endless rotating blue circle and a frozen PC. I had to Restart afte 30 minutes to get the PC working again.

Like Torchwood, I have my Updates set to LET ME CHOOSE. I am not going near Update untill I get a fix from Microsoft.

Updating on mine now seems to be fixed.

I turned off auto time setting, back dated the computer to the 3 Dec 2017, rebooted & ran Windows Update, it updated to the 3rd.

I then rebooted, reset auto time setting, changed computer date to today's date, re ran Windows Update & it checked & came back with Windows is up to date, with the time check also being current.

So it seems to be working now. No Try Again messages, no Red failure warnings. Also all Update settings have been returned to their original settings & all Windows Update History is intact.

Incidentally there is no indication of any update on the cause of the problem.

Are you talking about date and time> internet time> unticking synchronizing using the with an internet time server when you say "I turned off auto time settings" In other words how are you turning off auto time setting? I'd like to give this your solution a try...

I am laying low on this for the time being. It is good to see that some have been able to work on their computer to resolve this issue, at least for the time being. I prefer to remain tuned to this post and see what develops.

Yes gary, I do mean turning off Synchronising Time setting. To do this Left Click on the Clock at the bottom RH corner of the screen & select Change Time & Date Settings. When that opens there should be 3 tabs showing, select the Internet Time one, then click on the Change Setting button, then untick Synchronise with Internet Time Server & be sure to click OK

Then change the Date to 3 Dec & using the Date & Time tab, again be sure to tick OK. Then pass the mouse pointer over the clock to check that the date has been reset to 3 Dec. Then follow my Post #29.

I tried the technique of resetting the date and it didn't work.

I turned off Internet time sync, reset date to 12/3, and rebooted.
Launched Windows Update and got rec shield/X again.
Turned on time sync, reset date to 12/7 - then decided to repeat the steps again.
Same result.

EDIT: Just reread a post and it said reset to a date before 12/3 - oops - will re-try using 12/1 and post my results

UPDATE:

When I reset to December 1 and re-ran Windows update, it worked.
When I then re-set to auto sync, and did a date update so I was set back to today, I re-ran Windows update. It worked again. All my history is there.

Hooray!!
