ok,I've neglected u guys long enough. I've tried for too long to
resolve this and u've always had the answer. I'm running win7 32
bit trying to go to win7 pro 64 bit I bought w/ product key. I have
that on flash drive and burned the image to DVD.
Ok so far now I'm lost

My research says that I should clean install w/BIOS, not EFI.
(simpler?)

Will someone, in plain English, walk me thru this. Thanks

Hi 12Strings,

As i dont know what model you have can only provide limited info

First i'll start with a warning
The W7 pro you purchased is likely non-genuine - and
More significantly you might NOT actually have needed to buy it.
IF your laptop come pre-installed with W7 PRO ??

OK back to subject
2 things for Bios
Change the boot order so it reads the Cd/DVD >>first<< before your HDD/SSD
check CSM - ENABLED

Now insert CD/DVD shutdown then reboot it should, if the Bios settings are correct, start setting up

You may already understand, or maybe not, that the OS you want to install is a completely NEW OS to your computer.
And as such needs to be installed as if there were NO OS already on your PC.

I applaud your choice of a new OS, I just hope that your laptop has a 64 bit capable CPU, and that you've got 4GB of ram memory, or more if possible. Since your new OS will be considerably larger and require more service from your PC, you may expect a performance decrease.

Replacing your HD with an SSD would be a really good move, if you can afford it.

That's what I did on this little Toshiba laptop that I'm on now. I put in an SSD and max'ed out the RAM. Considering the little PC's natural, built in handicap of it's slow data bus, I installed Windows-7/Pro/x86 (32 bit). Now this little (OLD) PC runs better than it did when it was first released with Windows Vista on it.

First thing you must do is backup any and all date files that you may have on the PC. Making a total backup of your C: drive would be a good hedge against the possibility of a total Install failure of your new OS. I mention that, because I've seen it happen.

Once you have all your backups made, you should be able to install the new OS from either the Flash Drive or CD, whichever your PC prefers. Installing from a Flash Drive is much faster, by the way.
I'd love to help you with that install, if you lived closer.
Good Luck, and God Bless,
TechnoMage

What are the specs of this computer? Techno has spoken wisely! Many here can help you prep the computer by knowing the specs. Piriform Speccy is one very good frrebie that put the info on your desktop. Others here can tell what and how post the involved specs.

what specs are u referring to? The machine is Acer aspire 6930 and has had 64 bit Ultimate on it (originally had Vista). what is Piriform Speccy? Best way to back up? Simple please! Bought win7 pro w/product key(I have the # from email confirmation). Downloaded to flash. Burned to DVD. Also downloaded win7 pro 32 bit. Yeah, I'm losing it! I'm retired, $$$ is tight and I need to keep busy.

Hi 12Strings,

Just passed that same exact Lappy to "She Who Must Be Obeyed"

mine was the 6930G,
All you need to do is change the boot order, as i said slam the DVD in the tray - reboot (then follow the on screen instructions)
Forget about EUFI its not available on our comp.

BACK UP your data first, copy your documents/photos to a USB, make sure its big enough
As for programs If you have anything that requires a Key you will need to "find" them thats where programs like speccy come in handy, i prefer Belarc (free) run and PRINT the output
Products: Belarc Advisor

note max ram for this model is 4gb, it will actually run better with the 32bit version.

Clean Install Windows 7

take note #9 when the green line is COMPLETE the system will reboot EJECT the DVD NOW
otherwise it will start the set up again.

As W7 is coming to End of Life, MS will no longer be updating certain features.
So time to install a new Browser and AV

Roy
