Hi guys.

I know this problem has been talked about many times on a forum search, but I don't see any solutions that will correct my problem.

This is going to be a long first post as there is loads of settings.

I have 2 computers on my BTHub5-KGFP WiFi Router Fibre Optic. The main Windows XP and my Windows 7 32bit laptop. I've recently rebuild both computers because on annoying problems (that with be a new thread if anyone is interested).

Windows 7 rebuilt no problem. I use Network icon in the systray which finds WiFi connections. My BTHub5-KGFP is listed so I put in my password all done.

I know from the last rebuild what I have to do to share folder/files with Windows XP. You right-click on a folder check properties. On the Sharing tab click the Share button and type in Guest and the text box the Add. Hold your mouse over Guest and tick Read/Write. Do the same for all folders you want to Share. I Share the same folders on Windows XP.

If I look in Network it shows the BTHub5, My Win 7 computer name, My Windows XP computer name. If I double-click on Windows XP

Windows cannot access \\computer name
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. To try identify and resolve a network problems click Diagnose.

Diagnose
Details Error code: 0x80070035

Network Diagnostics
Make sure that the device or resource (computer name) allows incoming connections for File and Printer Sharing.

My Windows XP can access folders on Windows 7. I setup the HP WiFi printer and did a test print.

Network and Sharing Centre - Home network - Change Advanced Share Settings

Turn on File and printer sharing - ticked

Public folder sharing

Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can and write files in the public folders - ticked

Even though I don't want public sharing, I've ticked and unticked it make no difference

Network and Sharing Centre - Wireless Network Connection Properties

Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter - Settings

Client for Microsoft Network - ticked
QoS Packet Scheduler - ticked
File and Printer Sharing Microsoft Network - ticked
Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) - ticked
Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) - ticked
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver - ticked
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder - ticked

Other thread on here talk about removing Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6). Rather than uninstalling does un-ticking it remove it from service?

Network and Sharing Centre - Homegroup

Its showing connected. If you click on any folder. The Share with shows Homegroup Read/Write, Specific people shows Administrator, me and Guest.

If I leave the Homegroup and restart the laptop. Windows Explorer still shows The Share with shows Homegroup Read/Write, Specific people shows Administrator, me and Guest. How can the Homegroup still be showing if I've left the Homegroup?

Anyway Homegroup or no Homegroup I still can't access the folders on Windows XP.

I've started to make text files and problems on my computers with all settings so when I rebuilt I can put the same settings back, as they worked before.

Oh I forgot to say both computers on set on WORKGROUP.

Any help on resolving this accessing folders will be much appreciated.

You say you have setup a share on XP and granted guest permission but your not connecting as guest you set XP share allow everyone rights on the share then you have to ensure NTFS permissions are set as well. NetBIOS needs to be running on both PC's to access by name or you will have to use IP to connect

Thank you for the reply.

Initially when I set my network connection I could access the folders on the other computer. Now I've lost that connection.

On Windows XP when you share a folder it popups up you have to install Network connection insert Windows XP disc. I insert the disc then you can set the share on any folder. You don't have to specify share with a user, guest. joe blogs or anyone. The folder is shared with any computer on your Network.

I'm not sure about NetBIOS on Windows XP as I've said Windows XP can access all folders I've set on Windows 7 with Guest, which worked after my last build a couple of years ago.

As I've said both Networks show both computers and the BTHub5 router. If have desktop short-cut to my other computer which is the same as the Network connection. If I click on the other computer name as I've said.

I've set the file and printer sharing and the printer works.

I have a BT link via IP that shows connections and it shows both computers are connected.

Ok NetBIOS - Network Basic Input/Output System when it isn't abbreviated.

I'm surprise this forum doesn't use Speccy as its freely available and another forum I use always say post the Speccy published snapshot of the system.

I copied NetBIOS info from Windows XP

You might say why am I still using Windows XP as its old. The reason is I've always used Outlook Express for my email and I like its features. Considering Microsoft make Outlook Express they don't make a version that works on later OS. They make you use Microsoft Messenger which is total garbage. Even the old Messenger doesn't work anymore.

Have you tried connecting via IP NetBIOS is used only locally to resolve PC names it has no effect on the internet DNS service. On the local network one pc must be master browser. Did you change guest to everyone is it XP home or Pro?

But WinXP can see all the normal shared folder on the laptop. But the laptop can't even access WinXP.

As I've said on WinXP you check the properties of a folder and click the share button with anyone on my network. There name or computer you have to allow access to.

I don't see a problem with resolving computer names.

NetBIOS Name ULTIMA-WARLORD, WinXP, NetBIOS Name SAMSUNG-LAPTOP, laptop

These are the names they have always been and both computer could access both shared folders. On previous rebuilds and they have always worked.

I would guess the master browser in the main Windows XP computer.

I know these computer problems aren't easy to solve on the web unless its a common problem because you can't see the computer working or not working just make suggestions.

I have the same problem on car forums, you can't see the car. You don't know how mechanically minded the user is you can only make a comment on what they say.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while as I've have another big problem which I've sorted.

Network Control Centre - Wireless Network Connection Status

IPv4 Connectivity: Internet
IPv6 Connectivity: No network access
Media State: Enabled

I've searched on here but no solution found.

Looking at my previous posts I didn't mention after rebuilding Windows XP had no connection to my laptop. After rebuilding my laptop had a connection to Windows XP. I check the settings on both computers and they are the same. I had to put files on a flash drive to copy them.

Then Windows XP was connected to the laptop, now the laptop won't connect to Windows XP.

Network shows both computers on my Network but as I've said before if I click on the other computer.

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. To try identify and resolve a network problems click Diagnose.

I have a problem with the hard drive on my Windows XP computer. That's along story if anyone wants the know.

I put back the original 500GB drive just so I could access things and emails. This old drive was setup for my old Fujitsu laptop I check the Network and put a new link to they Samsung laptop. Now I can access all files on both computers. The settings are exactly the same as the old 2TB drive.

I bought a new SEAGATE Barracuda 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - 2 TB £67.99

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/compu...-5-internal-hard-drive-2-tb-10174585-pdt.html

I'm holding back on fitting it as the old drive has access to both computers.

After fitting the new hard drive in the Windows XP computer for some very strange reason after a couple of weeks it connected to my Windows 7 laptop. When no additional software or settings had been changed.

This year I had to fit a new hard drive to my Windows 7 laptop as that packed in. I installed the normal software and made the WiFi connection and it connected to the Windows XP no problem.

On previous rebuilds I know I have to set the share on each folder and add Guest read/write. I can access the folders on Windows XP. The Windows XP can't access the laptop even though it did before the new hard drive in the laptop.

Windows XP Network connections shows both computer names, but if I try and open the laptop. The normal stupid message contact your Network administrator, which I am on both computers.

The other strange this is Windows XP was set to MSHOME not WORKGROUP I don't know how that got changed. I changed it to WORKGROUP and it still can't access folders on my laptop. I could access the folders when it was MSHOME and I can still access them as WORKGROUP.

In Control Panel User Accounts it showed the Guest but it wasn't enabled. I enabled it and did a restart then it shows myself and Guest pictures to choose which account. I tuned off Guest account.

I've said before its a pity this forum does use Speccy to show computer details rather than typing in loads of text.

Why should it take NetBIOS time to discover pcs? You change any settings and do a restart then it should be recognised, why is there a time factor?

I've had this problem since I installed a new hard drive in the laptop. That connects to Windows XP no problem, XP can't access my laptop when it could before the new hard drive in the laptop.

Does the Speccy links show anything?

Ok I've got Windows XP to connect to my Windows 7 laptop.

I make notes of every setting for future reference in a text file and saved it to both computers. After I checked settings after the new laptop hard drive.

Network and Sharing Center

Turn off password protected sharing - selected when I checked it was now on selected.

I've checked and triple checked these settings.

How the hell can setting be changed on there own?

I know this is an old thread I made but its still the same problem.

I start the laptop up today and try and connect to my main computer ULTIMA-WARLORD to copy files over and it won't connect.

Windows diagnostic resets connection, still doesn't connect. It check your set for file and printer sharing, yes it always has been.

I look at my online connection and its shows both computers are connected. I unplug the Broadband WiFi and plug it back in and still no connection.

How can things happen on a startup today both computers connect all the time as I swap files over.

The diagnostic report says:

I did a system restore back to 06/04/20 that didn't fix the problem.

Any more suggestions please. ;)

I did a system restore in Windows XP back to 06/04/20. When its restarted I checked the Network and it showed all the same shared folders as my laptop. I should have clicked on them at the time to make sure it was connected.

I clicked on them latter and it wouldn't connect. It said you don't have permission to access the resource check administrator or contact.

IPv4 Connectivity: Internet
IPv6 Connectivity: No network access

Now it shows.

Network Control Centre - Wireless Network Connection Status

IPv4 Connectivity: Internet is ticked
IPv6 Connectivity: is ticked

This stupid problem I've had for nearly a week. I have to copy files to a flash drive then copy them back.

I use Avast Pro which did an update a few dates ago. I checked the settings it showed File and Printer Sharing wasn't enabled so I enabled it and I still can't share files or folders.

This same setting isn't available on the Windows XP running the same Avast Pro. Its a stupid setting system.

Why the hell does Avast Pro have File and Printer Sharing option which you can enable or disable its an anti virus. It checks all files added to the drive.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. ;)

This is a pain in the arse problem I've had for 2 weeks. I copy files over to the main computer 20 times a day I have to use a flash drive.

As I've said Network and Sharing Center file and printer sharing is turn on for Home and Public, I've disabled Public it still doesn't find the main computer Windows XP SP3 in the Network on the desktop.

I've done another system restore back to 04/04/20. On the restart Avast pops up saying there is an update do you want to restart the computer, I select no bleeding wait until I switch off later.

I checked Network and Sharing Center it showed Avast firewall NDIS6 Helper ticked I unticked and restarted, still no access to the other computer.

Why the hell does Avast have firewall helper the standard firewall is turned on. I want back into Network and Sharing Center and uninstalled it, restart still no connection to the main computer.

Network Discovery is turn on for Home, I've even turned it on for Public that makes no difference.

I've search the forum for the same problems.

All my computers are on the same network but each one can't see others

Nothing useful shows.

I make a text file on any changes I make and back it up on external drive and flash drive. I know every setting that works for every application so I don't forget.

The problem I can't understand is it work connect to the main computer one day which worked properly the next day it wouldn't connect.

I never install any application the last on was CCleaner 5.64.7613 on 24/03/20. I install the same on Windows XP it says I need Windows 7 or greater, more Piriform bull when they have made it free for many years.

I could do a rebuild when I did last year when the laptop hard drive packed up. That is not a big deal its the one application I use which installs in a few minutes then it takes 2 weeks to install all the different databases.

So I really need to sort this computer network connection.

This is a pain in the arse problem I've had for 2 weeks as I've said.

I did a format and a fresh install of Windows 7 32bit. I saved my text file of all the settings to the flash drive and the main computer.

I installed all the drivers and enabled the file and printer sharing in Network and Sharing Center.

It still won't connect to the main computer.

I checked remote desktop connection access not available
remote computer is not turned on the remote computer is not available on the network system
remote settings
allow remote access connections to this computer - ticked

advanced
allow this computer to be controlled remotely - ticked
invitations - set the maximum amount of time invitations can remain open 6 hours default
create invitations that can only be used from computers using Vista or later - unticked

remote desktop
don't allow connections to this computer - ticked
allow connections from computers running any version of remote desktop (less secure)
allow connections from computers running remote desktop with network level authentication (more secure) ticked makes no difference

restart both computers still won't connect

Speccy shows:

Sharing and Discovery
Network Discovery Enabled
File and Printer Sharing Enabled
File and printer sharing service Enabled
Simple File Sharing Enabled
Administrative Shares Enabled

What the hell is wrong with the settings I've always used before?

As I've said.

Client for Microsoft Networks - ticked allows you computer to access resources on a Microsoft network
Avast firewall NDIS6 helper - ticked - unticked Avast firewall NDIS6 helper
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks - ticked allows other computers to access resources on your computer using Microsoft Network

I uninstalled Avast firewall NDIS6 helper previously that made no difference.

Why the hell does it have Avast firewall NDIS6 helper, the firewall is switched on and enabled.

This system is pissing me off.

I may as well put the crap Windows 8 64bit back in if I can't resolve this problem.

I know you can only go by what someone posts about a problem on the forum.

Ask me anything I will make a screendump picture and post that.

Oh the other crap thing is my BT router BTHub5-KGFP keeps disconnecting. I have to switch it off and wait 20 minutes before it connects.

This happens 3 or 4 times a day. which is total crap for electronics you switch it on and it should work.

The problem with COVID-19 is if you report this problem and they check, its connected ok.
