What to do with an old TV?

I have a 19" RCA CRT TV I'd like to give away for salvage. I tried offering it for free on Facebook and Craig's List with no response. I even offered it to a local TV repairman that specializes in CRT TV repair to use for parts or to refurb and sell, but even he wasn't interested. To recycle these appliances costs a fortune here. Any suggestions?

The problem with old CRT devices is that they have been replaced by newer and safer technology - Nobody wants them

Here in the UK even the charity organizations stopped accepting them for resale some considerable time ago

The cost of recycling them, Is due to them containing highly dangerous heavy metals in small quantities, which requires special handling In the US, and other developed nations.

This has lead to some less scrupulous businesses shipping these off to africa. where it is killing many children who are involved in the recovery of these metals, by burning them as a first stage which releases the metals into the air, ground and water courses.

This has made the news here and has accelerated the switch to Flat Screen

Unfortunately the best option is the get the tv you have recycled safely in the US

I got a new TV last year and had to get rid of the old one. After learning city trash (Houston, TX) would not take it, I Googled and found a place run by the city that accepted and disposed of them. Try that in your town.

Check to see if any of the local trade schools might want it.

Over here we have a network called Freecycle where you offer items free to anyone that want them so they don't end up in landfill.

I got rid of my CRT TV through them, there are people who are just setting up home and have nothing so are very thankful to accept them, at least that way they have a TV until such time they can afford to buy one, not just TVs anything goes, so you can put things there on Offer or Wanted. It is a great resource to help people start out who don't have the funds to buy.

You might want to talk to the folks at videokarma.org. There are a lot of fans and collectors of Vintage and CRT televisions. Just a thought.

We have big blue trash bins on wheels and I toss old computers and TVs and whatever and cover it up with normal trash and into the trash truck it goes.

They make it a PITA to recycle or dispose of such items by imposing fees or I have to haul it to a specific place for proper disposal.

I know it's wrong but that's what I pay the trash service to do is to haul off my trash.
