Cant boot from a USB even though it's in device manager

I've put a call out for additional ideas with the senior members on the forum - hopefully they may have other options ;)

I am tuning in rather late, why do you need to boot into the USB drive & what do you actually want to do with the USB disc. Looking at the Disc Management screen shoot, it seems that the SSD & the USB drive have the same OS & partitions on them, although there is no Boot showing on the USB drive.

Is the SSD a clone of the USB?, if so how did you accomplish that?.

My SSD disk is playing up. The HHD is an old clone of the SSD. To replace the W7 version on the SSD I want to clone the HDD version onto it. But before I do I want to know what software is not on the HDD version. An easy way to do a comparison is to hop between the two versions using the BIOS.

As I wrote on last post, H: isn't marked as System and I: isn't marked as Boot.

I'm a little confused. You said that, if you replace the SSD with the HDD on the laptop it boots normally. Is that correct?

The Drive letter allocation is all wrong on both, remove the drive letters from the following

on the SSD - Drive 1 (Int) the system drive G and the recovery drive E

On the HDD - Drive 2 (usb) the system drive H & the Recovery drive K

This will set the drive allocations to the correct status.

You will not be able to have Drive 1 and Drive 2 in a dual boot as long as Drive 2 is in the USB External case - Windows 7 does not allow this configuration.

Physical swapping of the drive does work and this is the best that is achievable in a laptop with only one SATA connection. You can check the "Program Files" and Program Files (x86) directories on the HDD over the USB link, but you would need to swap the disks to check their actual operation


Megahertz07 The system and Windows partitions show correctly on the SSD Drive (Drive1) as this is the active drive, (The one running to produce the screenshot). The same partitions on the HDD over the USB, (Drive2), will not show as Active or Boot as it is not the active OS
