Hub not working, let me choose updates

I have an MBeat 7 port hub, 4 X USB 3.0 and 3 X USB2.0. This is plugged into a 3.0 card. When it was set up it kept stopping; from memory there were problems with Renesas, well documented. It's been stable for several years. last week the hub died, in stages. First the 3.0 ports went, and then the 2.0 ports. I've uninstalled Renesas and the generic USB hub, did not work. One option is to use a restore point.

I have the system set up so that all updates must be checked by me - some are not needed. I was therefore a bit shocked to see multiple updates that I have not seen. I checked the settings and it's "Give me updates but let me choose". Odd. I note that KB 295 2664 is still annoying me.

Due to the multiple updates I need to go back a bit further to ensure that the restore point is before the update. Is this the best way to proceed? Also, why are updates being installed without my knowledge? Thanks.

I've set WU to manual under Services and never check on WU page. Recommended updates is always un mark.
Once a moth i do a manual Check for Updates, mainly for Office updates.

For Windows I only install Security ONLY updates.

I like the idea of doing all updates in a block, and just security ones. I ignore nearly all program updates. The programs are working fine, and any minor improvements can usually wait. I've found that some purported program updates make the program worse. I'm happily using a 2013 program which is vastly superior to the versions since, which are very hard to use. OS upgrades are similar, although not as pronounced.

A hypothetical. A manual update is done on the first of the month and a few days later there's a security update, which is not installed for another 28 days. Would waiting this long compromise security?

The security vulnerability has been there since the OS has been released, ~10 years ago. Don't think one more month to fix it will make a big difference.
MS now releases the updates in a pack (monthly rollup). Instead of the Rollup (that contains spy and other things I don't want) I install the Security Only pack.

That's an interesting perspective about 10 years and another month. I had not considered nasties in the rollup. Security is my main focus with updates.

Can anyone assist me with my MBeat matter? Going back to a restore point looks viable.
