USB drives do not open a window.

Normally, when I plug a USB flash drive into a USB port or use an adapter cable to connect an SSD to the computer via a USB port, once the computer recognizes it, it will open a window with a variety of options, such Open Folder, to run something, etc.

Recently, that window doesn't appear when plug in something. I have to go into Computer to find the drive and open it. Does anyone know how I can that lost window back?

In gpedit, Is the change here:

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> AutoPlay Policies -> "Prevent AutoPlay from remembering user choices

Double check to make sure AutoPlay is still turned on, and "Open folder to view files" is selected for the USB device.

Thanks Brink. Unfortunately, that was not the problem. It shows as being turned on. On a hunch, I turned it off and saved the setting. Then I turned it back on and saved it. No joy.

That would only apply if the group policy had been enabled.

Yes I agree with Brink. However sometimes changes like this can be made and forgotten. Type gpedit.msc in the Start Menu search box; or use Win key + R, and type gpedit.msc there. You'd need to provide password if not logged-in as Admin.

okaay, I got a gpedit.msc not found message when I did that.

When in the Cdrom node, change the Autorun string value from a '0' to a '1' to Enable Autoplay.

I'm not having a good day. I tried running the first line in a command prompt and was told it couln't be found. What am I dong wrong?

You need to click Start and type regedit in the run... box and press Enter.

It did...some. When I got to CD ROM, AutoRun was already set to 1. Now what?

Yes, after Paul black told me how to do it. Still no joy since it showed Auto Play was set to 1.
