Hi guys

This has been going on for about 3 weeks now. My PC keeps shutting down and then says "NTLDR is missing press Ctrl+Alt-Del to restart" and windows won't load. I'm not shutting down my PC on purpose - it just does it by itself.

The only way I can get Windows to start up is by pressing the off button to force a shutdown and then it restarts fine.

If I restart the pc or shut it down and then start it Windows just loads fine. But this problem of it shutting down and saying NTLDR is missing is happening more and more

I have ran virus checkers and nothing found. Speed fan shows that temps are okay.

If anyone can advice on what I should do to find the solution that would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Andrew

Hi fobos8,

Welcome to SevenForums!

This has been going on for about 3 weeks now. I go to the PC desk and see the black screen with "NTLDR is missing press Ctrl+Alt-Del to restart". I'm not shutting down my PC - I leave it on all the time.

If anyone can advice on what I should do to find the solution that would be much appreciated.

[1] Download and run Malwarebytes [FREE] from here => Malwarebytes.
[2] Have you got any other HDD's attached?
[3] Has the boot order been changed?

Sounds like you need to fix the pbr.

bootice should be able to do it

Click process pbr. dot Bootmgr record. Select the windows partition in the dropdown. Click Install/CFG. Click OK.

View attachment BootIce.zip

Ideally should be done from outside Windows, but usually works fine if you run it from within.

I ran Malware bytes earlier tonight, quarantined a few issues. PC shut down about 10 mins ago.

I have an external HDD attached for backups.

Boot order hasn't been altered.

Let me be clear the PC is shutting down randomly. Surely this has nothing to do with booting problems.

Hi guys

The problem is getting worse. It shut down again last night and came up with the NTLDR missing error. I forced shut down and it started up okay.
But now I cannot connect to the net and when I click on control panel or windows explorer I get "The remote procedure call failed and did not execute"

Last night I ran seagate tools for windows just before I went to bed but it didn't complete. The pc had shut down in the night time.

I cannot run any disk checker now as nothing works on the PC I just get this message "The remote procedure call failed and did not execute"

Cheers, Andrew

I appreciate your answers about fixing the "NTLDR is missing error" but shouldn't I be finding out why I keep getting unexpected shutdowns.

I have cleaned out all the just inside the machine, ran a virus checker, but can no longer run a hard disk checker.

Hi fobos8,

Does the problem still exist if you detach the external HDD and boot?

Did you try SIW's suggestion below?

Sounds like you need to fix the pbr.

Click process pbr. dot Bootmgr record. Select the windows partition in the dropdown. Click Install/CFG. Click OK.

Ideally should be done from outside Windows, but usually works fine if you run it from within.

PBR is the Partition Boot Record.

Read this for some further information => Partition Boot Record (PBR).

PBR Partition Boot Record. Sometimes called VBR (Volume Boot Record).
It is a bit of code on the first sector of a volume. For win7 it should launch bootmgr. If bootmgr can't be found on that volume you will get the bootmgr missing message. If you get a message about NTLDR, there is something wrong with the code.

These are the messages you could get from valid win7 PBR

disk read error occurred...
BOOTMGR is missing...
BOOTMGR is compressed...
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Bootice is an application that can write various mbr and pbr code, among other things.

Download the zip file and have a look. That is a lot quicker than me explaining everything.

Thanks for the reply.

With bootice, I was concerned that it may do something straight off the bat when opened but I've found it's tutorial page so that concern is resolved. I've kept this program as a "may be needed".

I had not appreciated to any degree the difference between the pbr and the mbr. So thanks for that useful information.

Hi Guys

Thought you might be interested to know what the problem was in the end. My internal HDD was knackered. I was getting Disk errors in my windows log and my HDD was making strange noises.

Anyways this was the cause of my PC shutting down along with the occasional BSOD.

I ran HDD "health checkers" and they said my HDD was fine.

Anyway I put in a new SSD and all is good now.

Cheers, Andrew
