What's the best way to do an offline update in Windows 7 Professional SP1 (OEM) with the convenience rollup 2016 already installed?

I used the WSUS app to download the updates and ended up with +200 files, but I'm sure I don't need all of them. So, how can I spot what updates do I need?

I'm pretty new to W7 so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

A quick, safe and easy way to update is to use DISM++!

DISM++ - Basic Overview

DISM++ is a FREE implementation tool that has the ability to perform Windows Updates [WU]. Some of the advantages [but not all] are:

[1] The GUI is very easy to understand and use.
[2] It is much faster than M$’s WU because it uses a different engine.
[3] It downloads the latest WU DB from the M$ servers, scans your OS, and then lists the updates available.
[4] It doesn’t install superseded updates like M$ does.
[5] It gives you the option of what you want to install.
[6] The pre-ticked updates are what is recommended and are similar to the WU critical and recommended updates. The un-ticked updates are similar to the WU optional updates.

[7] It warns you if an update:
  • Includes telemetry.
  • Has known issues with certain hardware.
  • Needs exclusive access.
  • Is suspect.
  • Your OS doesn't need it.
  • Has any other known issues.
[8] It doesn’t require re-booting between updates.
[9] It can be used to either update an install.wim image OFFLINE, or to update the LIVE OS.

I hope this helps!

Hi, Paul Black.

Didn't know about this app, thanks for the heads up. However, since WSUS already downloaded all the update files to my computer, is there a way to do the necessary updates without relying on another 3rd party program?

I'm thinking about just installing all the updates pos-2016 rollup, since it has all updates before April 2016. Does it make sense?

Hi ADC,

The below is the old, laborious and obsolete way of updating the OS after a clean install.

[1] - KB3020369 - Servicing Stack Update - April 2015.
[2] - KB3125574 - Convenience Rollup Package - May 2016.
[3] - KB3172605 - Functional Update Rollup [THIS ONE ISIMPORTANT] - July 2016.
[4] - KB3179573 - Functional Update Rollup - August 2016.
[5] - Run WU [Windows Update] to get the rest of the updates.

Didn't know about this app, thanks for the heads up. However, since WSUS already downloaded all the update files to my computer, is there a way to do the necessary updates without relying on another 3rd party program?

I am assuming from the above that you have downloaded the updates using WSUS but have not yet installed them, is that correct?

I'm thinking about just installing all the updates post-2016 rollup, since it has all updates before April 2016. Does it make sense?

I don't quite follow what you are asking!

DISM++ will only download the WU's needed for your OS.

I hope this helps!

Hi ADC,

Correct. I only downloaded them. At this moment, have only the 2016 convenience rollup (and it's prerequisite updates) effectively installed.

DISM++ will only download the WU's needed for your OS.
Yeah, that's exactly what I need! But will it leave the files in a folder for me to backup them?

And I'm assuming DISM++ will download everything again, right?

Hi ADC,

[1] If you decide to use DISM++, then it is best to run the DISM++ Windows Updates a couple of times to make sure you get ALL the updates that are needed. DON’T install ANY of the ORANGE updates though.
[2] It can also install the required .NET Framework updates.
[3] Run WU to see what other updates are available, if any.

I hope this helps!

Yes, but I want to have a backup of the update files, in case my HD get corrupted or something.

Since WSUS already downloaded tons of updates, I think I'll just burn them on a DVD.

Hi ADC,

Yes, but I want to have a backup of the update files, in case my HD get corrupted or something.

If I understand you correctly, once you have all the updates installed you need to make a system image.
This way, if things go wrong in the future, you will be able to restore your OS back to the exact same state that it was when the system image was made in a very short time. There are two imaging programs which are very popular among members here, the first is AOMEI Backupper Standard [FREE], and the second is Macrium Reflect [FREE].

I hope this helps!

Hi erpster4,

Again, instead of installing KB3020369, install KB3177467 instead as KB3177467 supersedes KB3020369

Just to be clear...

[1] Are you saying that you need to install KB3177467 [Servicing Stack Update - October 2018] instead of KB3020369 [Servicing Stack Update - April 2015] and that the Convenience Rollup Package [KB3125574 - May2016] will still install correctly afterwards?
I only ask because when I tested this when KB3177467 first came out, once installed, it wouldn't install the Convenience Rollup Package!

[2] Updates KB3172605 [Functional Update Rollup] and KB3179573 [Functional Update Rollup - August2016] still need to be installed after the Convenience Rollup Package [KB3125574 - May 2016] is installed?

I used DISM++ as instructed and everything seems to be working just right.

Just for the record, I already had the KB3020369 installed as it was a prerequisite for the 2016 Rollup. Apparently, DISM++ took notice of it and marked only the necessary updates according to my system situation.

Again, I'd like to thank you all for your input and support. Great forum! :-)

You are most welcome!

DISM++ is a great utility that quickly and easily gets the OS upto date without the hassle and time needed that WU needs.

No. Only the 4 updates I had before.

The updates however appear listed as installed in the Programs and Features list:

51 updates for Windows
22 updates for NET Framework client profile
21 updates for NET Framework extended

Is it a known bug or something?

Not a bug! DISM++ works somewhat differently than Win Update, search engines, etc. I was already aware of what you are now aware of with my question!

BTW: DISM++ doesn't offer you superseded updates as WU does, as well as color coding and notifications of problematic updates.

Ah, I see.

After 2 DISM++ passes, I loaded WU and it found some updates, and 2 new drivers for my LAN and video. Since I'm using (for now) only the native drivers, is it recommended to update them too?

And as a side note, after the updates, Windows loading became considerably slower than before, but I think it was expected.
