Comodo Internet Security couldn't start properly one day. I uninstalled and restarted. Then reinstalled but failed. It asked me to restart. I was no longer able to boot into Windows after that.

When Windows started, it went directly into Startup Repair. After about 15 minutes, it stated it failed to repair with the following errors:

I tried system restore but failed. The error message was as follows:
(not exact wording since using another language)
System restore failed while logging in to restore from the restore point.
An unspecified error occurred during system restore. (0x80070003)

I tried twice to boot into safe mode but failed.
I tried to press F8 rapidly or held down F8 key once computer started . None worked. They simply went straight to the "Startup Repair" loop.

What's up? How could I fix so it could boot again?
Using Windows 7. Thank you.

Try booting into the installation DVD/USB [if you have one] and run Startup Repair from the System Recovery Options menu.

I hope this helps!

Hi masterton,

I created a bootable USB drive using Rufus with the following settings:

  • Partition scheme: MBR.
  • Target System type: BIOS or UEFI-CSM.
  • File System: NTFS.
  • Cluster Size: select the 4096 bytes(Default).
I changed the boot sequence and chose USB drive as the first one. Still it won't boot and jumped straight to the startup repair (and failed). What's wrong?

I still want to fix if possible.

If not, what is the best way to backup all program data/settings and files from the laptop in this case? Thank you.

Where did you get the ISO from to create the bootable USB from?

If not, what is the best way to backup all program data/settings and files from the laptop in this case? Thank you.

If it comes to that then I will post a method for you to be able to backup your data.

I hope this helps!

I made a mistake and chose USB FDD, instead of USB HDD. It could boot to the USB drive now.

I ran the startup repair from the USB drive but failed. What else should I do?
Thank you.

Did it give an error message?

Hi masterton, have you tried running system restore [a point before the issue started] from the installation USB?

Hi masterton, have you tried running system restore [a point before the issue started] from the installation USB?

I couldn't run at all.

When I ran the system recovery option from the USB drive, the system did not list any operating system or drive in the list.

This is what is normally shown, but the list is empty in my case.

C drive is system reserved.
D drive is actually where Windows installed. I'm not sure if it is the reason Windows disk failed to detect a system partition.

Hi masterton,

[1] Was it from TechBench or Windows ISO Downloader.exe?
[2] What version/edition and bit-type is your OS?

Please answer the above!

C drive is system reserved.
D drive is actually where Windows installed. I'm not sure if it is the reason Windows disk failed to detect a system partition.

I don't suppose you can get into...

Disk Management

Click Start => right-click Computer => click Manage => click Disk Management or from the command prompt on the USB?

1. Windows ISO
2. Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

No, it couldn't boot normally or in safe mode, so I couldn't go to disk management. How could I do that through command prompt?

I ran chkdsk from the startup repair (not from the USB drive) through command prompt. It was successful. No bad sector was found.

P.S. When I replied about the C drive and D drive, I didn't see your question. Only after refresh. That's why it appears I ignored the questions at that time. Sorry

I tried to run the following command in the USB drive.

I switched to drive C. Then type:
bootrec /fixmbr

followed by:
bootrec /fixboot

I tried to reboot. The following message showed up this time (instead of going straight to startup repair).

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause...
