Microsoft send me the message below. What should we do when security updates end?
I very much prefer Windows 7 and would hate to part ways with this operating system.

Yo can stick with your windows 7 safely at least for next 5 years, right now I don't thinking about update to windows 10 at least for the next 5 years.
It's more only I'll start thinking to change windows seven if I've compatiblity problem with the programs I use in my work.

I saw that flash up on my computer yesterday and will probably uninstall the update that triggers it (if some kind soul could remind me which one it is).

Having thought about this a great deal, I've decided to stick with Win7 and see what happens. I've an anti-virus installed, Malwarebytes for good measure and will use Chrome instead of IE11 and see what happens. I'm not going to jump ship to Win10 or anything else, until I see what, if anything happens, with Win7. It's my favourite OS and it doesn't make sense to get rid of something that has served me perfectly.

Install win10, install classic shell, install winaero tweaker, disable UAC, disable Cortana, never look back. I did it last week - disk footprint is down by 20GB, interface looks and operates the same as it has the last 20 years, drivers are finally current.

There's a thread here covering that subject, there might even be 2 threads.

Are you satisfied with Windows 7?
johnhoh--that doesn't take into account the wonky W10 updates.

But I'm amused that you use the Win98 icons, because I've done my UI in XP style, which I had originally made in 98style. I work online, I find that using the UI I've always used makes my work faster and more efficient.

Love the "We know change can be difficult" part of Microsoft's message. As if those of us still on Windows 7 are intimidated by Windows 10's new colour scheme and Settings tile.

Nothing, not a damn thing. It isn't the end of the world just because you don't get "updates." I don't even hardly use updates now as it is and I run a netbook as a FTP server with XP. I have never gotten malware or any of that scare tactic crap.

And just how many damn updates does an OS need? Is it that broken?

Run Sandboxie for your browser, scan all downloads at Virus Total and don't browse shady websites and you'll be fine.

We can't tell you want to do after EOL but you can:
1) Switch to 10.
2) Switch to 8.1 if you have a copy.
3) Switch to Linux or a BCD derivative.
4) Stay on 7.

There are already multiple threads on this issue.
Windows 7 and Office 2010 End of Support
Windows 7 End Support - Making transition to Windows 10 and Office 365
I want to use win7 "forever" and never upgrade to win10
Why do you prefer Windows 7 over Windows 8.1 ?

Is it supposed to act as a hardware firewall? I'd love to learn more about this.

consumerist system so changing pieces of hardware = damage to the environment, global warming and so on.

You decide wich planet and society do you want! with you litle change(keeping your old sistems and no change if is not necessary) you could change the world.

You also have to consider power consumed. Modern cpu's use less electricity, but give better performance. This is particularly important in systems that run at 100% for hours/days eg I do a lot of 3D rendering.

You could argue that hardware upgrades benefit the environment.

What I try to explain is that not is the tecnology evolution is bad in itself, is the perverse politic of how this tecnology is selling in that way describing that politic is the constant buy and throw of all kind of things from hardward or anything else like televisions whashers, fridges etc.(programmed omniniscence) that this economic system evoce all of us and this is could be a harmfull to our world and for all of us.

Just use Wumgr, 400kb freeware package, disables auto-updates and provides interface to check manually when you want or not at all, can also pick and choose which updates to install. Best part, unlike past windows versions that could take forever just to check for updates, this program takes 5 seconds to check.

Best.

Wish we could change the world, but we can change only the little piece around us. And the throwaway economy doesn't take our individual financial circumstances into account. Most people keep a credit balance to keep up with the "latest and greatest" products. I can't throw away my computers till they die. The price of a smart-phone is way beyond my means, so I use a perfectly good flip-phone. No one really needs to change their smart-phone every few years, but the IT industry has convinced them that they need instant gratification and unlimited services.

We've wandered away from the topic at hand.
