What should we do after January 2020

...
I actually do the Windows 10 free upgrade on all of the computers I get free and then donate them to community facilities that are in need of computers but don't have a budget for any.

My computer club has a group that refurbs computers for charities and schools.

Are you sure you're doing them a favor by downgrading to Win 10?

And I never touched a computer till I was 50, but I've belonged to my local PC Users Group since 1996.

Lance's cub has stopped bopping. He's in shock.

I've been looking on the web for the story about the lost emu, your cousin. But I've found 3 other stories about runaway emus, one in May of this year. Seems to be a common occurrence.

Was one of those runaways in the Phoenix, AZ area? That's not far from my stomping grounds. It was quite emusing.

The computers are used for training and job applications so it's pertinent to have an OS that is supported and works with state offices etc.

Banyarola, I think that sums it up LOL. But take in consideration Windows 10 was the beginning of MS Forcing us to do things. Install Windows 10, Update Windows 10 and Upgrade Windows 10! Windows 10 is constantly changing, and that's good for noone as far as I can see. Soon it seems there will be less changes and Feature Updates (Upgrades Really) funny how MS want's to call these Updates LOL, when they are in fact Upgrades! Full Upgrades with potential to wreck your computer.

Well put, Nasty 7.

I can also agree with some that Windows 10 is a must-have in their business environment.

But, I'm not in business any longer and windows 7 Pro (x86) serves my needs 100%. Other than windows itself, I run NO MS software, but Freeware, Shareware, etc. And I've had MS Updates shut OFF for years.

So what do I do when Win-7 hits its EOS date? Not a dang thing!

I'll just continue to keep it clean and backed up on a regular basis and "Keep on Truckin' ".

Heck, I still have one little Netbook that is running Windows XP, SP2, and handles my email just fine.
During the last Hurricane, I was out of power for five days, so I took my little Netbook to Dunkin' Donuts where I could get free WiFi and check my email.

I've tested various versions of Win-10 on several of my 14 computers, and the only big plus I've seen so far is the advanced driver package that comes with Win-10. It will fully install on almost any PC without me having to install any drivers.

Cheers Mates!

Yes Nasty...I know what you mean..
I just don't worry that much about these things...It's a losing battle...
An operating shouldn't demand so much attention with your privacy when your entire life isn't private anymore..

I google something and 10 minutes later I am getting ads about what I googled...
Gmail is scanning your emails for key products you may be talking about and then selling the data so you can get targeted ads...
The gov. wont protect you because they want your data too...

Right now rather then bother myself about privacy, W10, Google etc...I'm trying to figure out what I'm having for lunch.. I should Google, 'What's for lunch',,,Maybe they have some good suggestions..

AS a PC tech, (now retired) I've probably (well, maybe) installed Windows 10, or set up Win-10 on new computers for my customers, more than the average user.

There are two things I do during Setup, for increased security: One is to disable "WUDO" and the second thing is to disable "Cortana", by renaming the Core.dll file so it can't load during boot.

That entails performing several steps, but it's all together doable. (somewhere, I found a Batch File that will do that little deed.)

OH, and for maximum security, I do not and will not run Win-10 as my personal (every day) OS.
It takes several hours, to manually go through Win-10 and disable every one of the built in security holes.
Grrrr!

Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?

No, our lives aren't over, but you can't work efficiently when the machine you're working on keeps changing. By the time you've mastered the old OS, M$ cranks out a new one, and you have to start all over again. Waste of time and effort.

To me that's the half-empty pov. I welcome all challenges with the goal to master/lord over them. Been driving these machines since 1981, retired at the young age of 55 (resulting in everyday being Saturday!), collecting SS now for some years and, believe it or not, still putting 8+ hours a day on my machine when not out & about. Life is good ... :p

My 7 year old laptop seems to struggle with Windows 10, it runs extremely hot, it crashes all the time. Windows 7 is the only Windows OS that works and I don't want use a Linux distro because I can't find a decent remote desktop program for it.

About privacy, some simple protection:

  • Use UBlock Origin ad blocker, and quit all your Google products. Duckduckgo and Startpage use Google results but don't record your IP Address.
  • Only Google I use is Youtube, and I don't comment or upload videos, then scrub my cookies with soap and bleach.
  • Every site login is different, with a 14-character PW of mixed characters.
No one has perfect privacy on the web, but I try to keep as much as I can. When I search my name on the web, the profiles are filled with misinformation.
