What should we do after January 2020

Make sure the new machine has an intel skylake cpu and NOT a later cpu (like intel kaby lake, intel coffee lake, or amd ryzen

Make sure the new machine does NOT have a motherboard chipset of 370 or 390. Go with 170 or 270, both of which are driver compatible with Win7.

I have an 8th gen Cofee Lake i7 and a HP 8437 Z370 motherboard. Do these cause problems on Win 7 or is it a problem only for the user you're trying to help?

Windows 7 should work fine, the main issue is finding the drivers for them, as the manufacturers might not be making them for 7 anymore. You could always use a site like the Win-Raid forums for help on that though. Forum - Win-Raid Forum (Drivers - Firmware - Modding)

The integrated GPU on coffee lake will not work on win7, but that's not an issue as long as you use a video card.

The USB 3 ports on a z370 will not work on win7 unless you go through some gyrations. Here is a link on how to do it.

windows update will not work on win7 with coffee lake by default, but you can get around that using the wufuc tool

well that's just great, looks like i'm doomed to use win 10 and have to deal with this forced v-sync issue that makes my 144hz/60hz dual monitor setup not work well.

edit: actually, i followed the first link and saw that it's for ASUS Maximus X Hero. I'm on an HP Pavilion Power 580-199ng. Do the instructions work for any model or is it only for the maximus?

yes. You can do this and the result will be a system that looks exactly like your old system, same programs, same tweaks, same settings, same data, but runs at the speed of a new system because its on new hardware. To make this transfer everything below must be heeded. Otherwise your only option is a Clean Install on Win7 on the new system.

-------------------------------
Make sure the new machine has an SSD drive, which is the number one thing that will speed you up.

The below specs are not in production as of 2019 so you should probably buy a used or refurbished system.

Make sure the new machine has an intel skylake cpu and NOT a later cpu (like intel kaby lake, intel coffee lake, or amd ryzen - all of which present annoying driver challenges for win7, plus, the fastest skylake cpu is very close in single-user speed to the fastest cpu of 2019 anyway. skylake = 6xxx, kaby lake = 7xxx, coffee lake = 8xxx. I recommend the i7-6700k)

Make sure the new machine does NOT have a motherboard chipset of 370 or 390. Go with 170 or 270, both of which are driver compatible with Win7.

If you follow the above, you can clone your old hard drive right onto the new system's ssd drive. The only requirements to ensure compatibility are:

- make sure your new system's drivers are downloaded onto your old hard drive's desktop before the clone. That way you can load them easily once you boot from the new system.

- BEFORE shutting down the old system one final time, change its device driver hard drive controller to the "Standard AHCI 1.0" driver. The way to make any Win7 boot drive able to be rebooted on any different win7 hardware system is to make sure you are using the universally-compatible hard drive controller, which is the Standard AHCI 1.0 driver.

- make sure the hard drive bios setting in your old machine AND your new machine is AHCI. That is, not raid, and not IDE.

The one glaring flaw with all that is, if the original OS is an OEM (came with the computer), it won't work on a new computer.

Move into the future guys....I have W10 on another machine and it's really not that hard to get used to....I'm beginning to like it more then my W7 machine..
If you keep Windows 7 after the expiration date you are asking for trouble.....
If you have some programs that you really need to run on W7 and don't need internet then keep it for that and cut the cable.

Pretend it's a new version of LOL...You'll learn it quick enough.

Don't think that's possible since it's built in into the Desktop Window Manager and explorer itself. Disabling Game DVR does not fix this.

A decent operating system should not make you jump through all kinds of hoops to prevent it from doing all the noxious things that Windows 10 does to your computer (and to you). for this reason alone, users who value having control over their computer should avoid it. Especially considering that there are so many fine Linux systems out there (Ubuntu, Mint, Zorin, Solus...and many more).

Note: post edited by OP after it caused a bit of a flare-up. My apologies.

Thank you johnhoh. That is some great info you posted for me earlier. Apparently, wiser heads prevailed and removed all of the silly posts. However, your last one should not have been removed. You had mentioned that with some tweaking one could easily (in 1 hour if I recall) have their Windows 10 machine perform like a Windows 7 system (my wording here is approximate). Has this process been documented anywhere?

-thx

You're welcome. The documented process is in the link.

Isolating Win10 from all unrequested microsoft intervention (which is what we have with Win7), and also making Win10 look and act like Win7 is easily done with three free programs - Sledgehammer, Classic shell, and Winaero tweaker. The last few years while most of us have been complaining about and avoiding Win10 due to its many issues, there were a quite a few generous programmers devising free and easy to use programs that quickly fix those issues.

Making Win10 look and act like Win7

I'd be quite interested to know how many members plan to continue using W7 or will stop using it and if so will they be using W10 or another OS. Poll anyone?:-)

If support for W7 wasn't ending, like most people here I would continue using it, but I guess I'll reluctantly switch to W10.

I'll not stop using Windows 7 even after end of support..It's like my old HP laptop with Windows XP SP3.. it still turns on and i use it to backup my mails in Outlook Express 6.0.

Now for the future..i guess i'll turn to Windows 10 one day. Apple? Not worth the price of their laptop compare to a self build powerfull desktop PC. Free OS? No either, i do not think an install on a brand new computer. I hate to be resigned.

I have lots of options. Convert my 7 to 10 (no), 8.1, 2012, 2012R2, 2016, or a Unix based system. I think for now I'm going to stay on 7 and eventually convert to Linux using 8.1 or 2016 in VMware for anything that requires an updated version of Windows. However I still have to test certain functionality so I haven't made up my mind yet. I'm not happy with the prospect but I'd much rather use Linux than 10. Who really knows where windows will be at that time. Maybe the next version will be more user friendly, not have all the tracking, and will not force you to install updates that will only screw it up. Or maybe that's just my pipe dream.

Windows 7 FOREVER!!! lol...
the only chance of upgrading testing is to clone my current HDD onto a new HDD of the same size.. and see if a Windows 10 upgrade borks/bricks it... if not.. idk I still don't really like Win10 AND KEEP that old HDD as a backup...
