Is it possible to keep Win7 safely running after Jan 2020?

Right know I got windows 10 32 bit & XUbuntu 18.xx 64 bit installed (Yes, I gave up on Linux mint).

I am trying to decided between windows 10 & XUbuntu.

The reason, I would miss the dvd player. You can install one. There is a big debate on this issue, Microsoft even recommends using the full software, the software allegedly illegal decodes the dvd so you can watch it. The software is not allegedly illegal in all countries though.




Mod note: I am trying to be careful and not break the forum rules. That why I didn't mention the name of the software.



Side note: I haven't posted for awhile because of health issues and yes I still have them.

I see what your getting at. I have a way to go back to windows 7 sp1. I am currently trying windows 10 & XUbuntu.

I would also like to use a dvd player. If I Install the media player that can play dvds (full version) in windows 10, isn't that illegal in the U.S. even though Microsoft recommends it or is it one of those gray areas?

I would go back to windows 7 just for the dvd player. That why I was asking if it safe to use Windows 7 after Jan 2020? Yes, it might still be connected to the internet.

its (WMP) available in W10, but its not the default

You can still change the region 4 times via Device manager.

There are loads of free dvd players so what is the problem? Itts far better to go with 10 or linux as both are uptodate and secure and supported with drivers soon you wont be able to get drivers for 7 as firms wont pay to get the driver registered for an old system

VLC should be able to play anything you want. For Blu-ray to play in VLC you have to Google it as there are some steps involved.

I agree with F22 Simpilot.
Here are just a few of the reasons why VLC is so good as a media player.

• It is open source [the actual code can be examined closely for any tracking etc, of which there is none].
• It has been in development for many years [1997] and is therefore stable.
• It is still actively being developed.
• It works with internal codecs, so there is no need to download any additional codecs/packages.
• It plays almost everything passed to it [both Audio and Video wise].
• It works on many platforms [you can use the same controls on your computer, smartphone, iPhone etc].
• It also allows you to stream video around your LAN [or even the Internet].
• Best of all, it is FREE.

The only specialty software you need is for playing Blu-rays, but Leawo is free and plays Blu-rays.
