I have ADHD. Learning is NOT simple for me.

A little off topic post

Wow, I didn't know that. I have a similar disability. That why my grammar is not good. You are right it does take us longer to learn stuff. That why I couldn't go to college.

I just read, Microsoft maybe changing the startmenu again in Windows 10. Sorry for suggestion this in a windows forum. Lady Fitzgerald, I think you might like Xubuntu 18.04 if you don't have any windows software you depend on. I am debating between keeping w7 & Xubuntu 18.xx, or keeping W10 & Xubuntu 18.xx. The reason I say Xubuntu it is real simple to install. However, some computers are picky on what operating are installed. Xubuntu does have a slow boot up and goes blank during the boot up. Linux mint 18.xx changed a lot of things I don't like.

I have done a clean install of Windows 7 using Dell re-installation disk (Dell sent me one). I also use Free Macrium reflect backup and restore.
It'll take me a lot of adjustment and compromise to get myself familiar with the existing Windows 10. I just have to look for a good deal for a laptop this year's Black Friday so the change could be worth it. I'm tired of replacing my batteries as well.

I've solved the 7 vs. 10 problem by having 3 computers, one a refurb from a retired computer techie. If I ever need 10 for my online work, I'll convert just one of them or make a Virtual 10 (I think that's what it's called--having one OS inside another.)

I've read a few comments saying things like "we don't upgrade because we fear change" or mentioning people being luddites.

I don't agree with this. I'm no luddite at all, I'm quite up with the latest technology. I keep most other things up to date. I just don't like Windows 10. It's too bloated and messy for me. I don't want forced updates. I've had enough issues over the past 12 months trying to fix bork ups from a windows updates, to the point where I'm glad updates are coming to an end on 7. I know it's possible to delay them, even on 10 home now I believe? But I just have no faith in MS updates at all now. The Windows insider idea does nothing to restore my faith either.

Honestly, I know I'm in the minority here, but I'd rather use 8.1 for a while instead of 10. If 10 eventually becomes something I want to use, then I will. But I've been using it, not on my systems, and I just don't want to upgrade. Nothing to do with fear, it's just my personal preference. A lot of people hate 8.1, I personally don't mind it at all once I've tweaked it.

If people want to use 10 then all good, I genuinely couldn't care less what OS someone wants to use. I don't spend as much time tweaking around with PCs as I used to anyway, as I just don't have the time anymore.

Use 7, use 10, use Linux, use a calculator - it's all good! :thumbsup:

I don't have faith in M$ anymore. I won't even consider 10 unless they change the update system to give us a choice, they take away the telemetry, and make the yearly broken overhauls optional. I could live with the new GUI but that isn't my only beef with it. I'd also prefer 8.1 over it and I even considered it. Likely though I'll eventually go to linux because I don't want to go to 8.1 only to go to Linux after a few additional years. Software would probably be supported longer on 7 than 8.1 due to its popularity and I'm not updating 7 now so really which switch to 8.1? I have never liked Linux as a desktop OS but I would take it over 10.

You can download the ISO from MS and break it down to barbones! Well maybe not completely barbones but close! This is obviously about security and removing anything unwanted. Here's a Windows 10 install that may suit you. It's up to Us to break Windows 10 down. If you don't like what you see! You can always start over again. It would all depend on how much time you have on your hands. That Is The Fun Of ISO's.. There is no end of what you can do with them. Keep a copy of the original. You can always go back.. Experiment and Find your nick! It Can Be Just that Easy.

I am retired, but even I don't have the time to jump through all the hoops it takes to make W10 bearable. Remember the saying, Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again. It's time to either swallow the bitter pill that is W10, or leave it for greener pastures.

Oh for crying out loud; what a crock! That is just absurd! I transitioned from Commodore 64's Basic 8.0 to NT without too much trouble. I had only a little trouble going from NT to XP. My transition from XP to to Win 7 was far easier (I was functional from day 1). But, instead of Win 8.0 being even easier still, I had to have help to get functional enough to just try it out (and I didn't like it; Win 8.1 wasn't much better). Still, my life wasn't over because Win 7 was still alive and well.

Then comes along Win 10 and its lost features, frequent pretty much complete redesigns, spying, forced and buggy updates, etc. :rolleyes: Still, my life is not over. I will just continue with Win 7 for a while until I can get comfortable enough with Linux to give Windows (and especially MS) the old heave ho (with one of my high heels shoved its backside). My life will not be over until my old carcass dies!

I don't have a problem with change, including new technology, as long as the change benefits me. If it doesn't benefit me, why the heck should I adopt it? And I especially do not like it when it is being rammed down my throat!

If you like Win 10 and MS, fine (btw, watch out when a woman says "fine"); I couldn't care less because it's your choice. But do NOT be putting down people who do not share your likes and dislikes!

This is when us gentleman need to exit the building Quickly!;)

As for Win 10. I prefer my option from my post. Take it apart and cut it down to the way I like it. ("I don't want to be Rude but here's The Bird to you MS!") You don't know what that means look it up, but most do. I have the ISO from MS and am going to start working on it tomorrow. When I'm done I'll VM it for testing and continue tweaking till I get what I want. And when MS comes out with an update I'll take that ISO and take out what I don't want and VM it. And when I'm happy with what I have! I'll disable update. (It can be done people. It just takes some "In Layman's Terms" Messing about)

For Myself, the path was this:

Win 3.1 -> OK
Win 95 -> Cool!
Win98 -> Cooler!
Win98se -> Uh, what exactly did I pay extra for here?
Win 2000 -> Made me feel like a pro!
WinME (for literally two days) -> AYFKM???!!!!
Win 2000 -> It's great to be back home!
WinXP -> Best yet!
Win7 -> Even better!!!

So, what makes me feel confident in having skipped Vista, 8, 8.1 and 10?

Well, right about the time I went the Win 2000 route in the timeline above I got a job as a PC Field Service Technician. Been in computers ever since. (Didn't get my IT degree until six years ago, though.) Fix 20-30 computers a week and you kind of get to know which ones are a PITA and which ones aren't. (That goes for PC brands, too. Packard-Bell, anyone?)

I promise never to post an opinion of mine unless the content is cleared first by Lady Fitz confirming it isn't a 'crock'!

I am sure your opinion would be welcome. You may have to be prepared to defend it, though. ;)

I installed Win 7 early during their extended open beta, dual-booting with XP. I expected it to suck like Vista did. Literally within 24 hours I was just mashing past the boot options straight to Win 7. Still not finding the suck. (I was looking hard for it, though.) After about a week I realized that I wasn't booting into XP at all anymore.

If my life was over at any point during the process I seem to have been resurrected fairly quickly.

The point is, people needed to show respect for other people opinions. For example, I have a few scooby doo cd games that will totally be obsolete after 2020 even though I am using a windows 10 32 bit system. The reason adobe is ending there flash support. I still would like to play them occasionally.

I think you also need to look up ADHD & ADD, I have a form of it as well. For me, my disability makes me good with configuring computers to a point. It took me awhile to understand wifi and network connection. I still have trouble with network connection hooking two computer together.

In My opinion here is my list if you have add or adhd
Linux mint xfce 17.3 or below
Xubuntu 18.xx or above
Linux lite if installed by-itself on a primary partition.
The rest would take a learning curve including windows 10.

I have done a clean install of Windows 7 using Dell re-installation disk (Dell sent me one). I also use Free Macrium reflect backup and restore.
I am retired, but even I don't have the time to jump through all the hoops it takes to make W10 bearable. Remember the saying, Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again. It's time to either swallow the bitter pill that is W10, or leave it for greener pastures.

The above statement was true a few years ago. Not today.

Time it took to make win10 bearable in 2016: 10-40 hours

Time it takes to make win10 pretty much exactly like win7 in 2019: 1.5 hours

Making Win10 look and act like Win7

It will still be Win 10 and will still keep getting broken updates. I quit downloading and installing updates for Win 7 a year and a half ago because I got tired of them breaking my computer.
