One of this week's updates (not sure if it was 4310 or 5102) wrecked my laptop which will continue to run Win7.
It got to 100% and stayed there for 3 hours so I had to cold boot.

It rebooted and stayed at 35% for another hour so I did a restore of the partition from my Backup.
I'm going to try them again one at a time and see what happens.

These last updates are not going at all well. The network update wasn't progressing, stuck on downloading at 0%, so I stopped it. Updates says it was successfully installed but can't see how it can be. The quality roll up, the same, won't progress past 0% and am currently trying to install the malicious software removal and the same thing is happening with that. Have never had a problem before.

In addition to that, there are two additional optional updates, a network card adapter which has also failed.

What a leaving present!

Is Windows Update creating the Restore points before each update?

I create a RP myself as a safety point before I begin to install updates. But with these latest updates, I don't think it's getting to the point where it is creating a RP. I've abandoned it all for now. My laptop is working perfectly at the moment and I certainly don't want to wreck it with these latest updates. I'll wait for a few days.

I was installing each update separately and it seems rather coincidental that it should happen with all three.

Yes I have system images going back six months or so, so no harm's been done.

I've just tried again, and all three have now installed OK. The optional updates that came through initially, Broadcom Adapter 802.11n and Intel - Other hardware Management Engine Interface - have both disappeared but there is now a servicing stack update.

I'll leave that for tomorrow, enough fun and games for today!

The rollups are garbage imo, and have been for the last couple of years. I've never installed any of them on my main PCs, I've only installed the Security-only updates.

The VM's which I've installed the rollups in have had a few issues which have caused me to just rollback snapshots and forget about them, especially when it comes to getting the damn things installed in the first place!

If you haven't fixed the issue, try restoring a restore point or system image to before the update, then hide the update in WU. Try installing the Security-only update instead and see if the issue happens with that update too. You only really need the Security fixes anyway.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4534314

As this is the final update from MS for non-esu, I wouldn't expect them to rush to fix anything (if at all).

The telemetry updates have been in the rollups for the last couple of years. Very easy to block it all though if you're concerned about it.

Just Google "Neutralize Telemetry in Windows 7 and 8.1" and it will take you to a site which has a script you can download.

Microsoft shipped the last update for Windows 7 with the KB4534310 update. As some users have now reported, the wallpaper was no longer displayed after that. The screen remained black. But as usual not with all users.

As it turns out, this error only occurs when the "Stretch" selection is used in the wallpaper settings. As well as setting another selection such as fill, customize, etc., the wallpaper will also be displayed again.

MS gave me a send off gift on a seldom used laptop. After the update my wifi wouldn't connect. Had the dreaded 169.x.x.x ip (ipconfig /all). ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew took forever and came back no joy. The parting peach MS gave me was turning on their firewall with a global block. In my use of Win 7, the only threats I experienced originated with MS. One step closer to installing Debian.

Aha, "Web Translator" hope is right at bottom line article suggesting us that a hotfix could remain possible for that wallpaper bug after the January end of support.. though I didn't had it when it is set to stretch on mine.

Yep! I have task scheduler set to run it at startup on all my systems. Handy little script.

I've just read an article saying MS has issued a statement about the desktop wallpaper bug. Apparently they intend to fix it for ESU customers only. So if you haven't paid for ESU you're basically SOL!

Nice parting gift from MS there!

I'm hoping they'll change their minds if people kick up enough fuss about it. I'm glad I stopped updating a few months ago tbh. Couldn't handle anymore borked updates.

Hi,
I did December 2019 quality rollup on all rigs and everything seems fine to me

Also thanks for the script search not sure why you'd need to redo it though seems to state unless you install more updates it should stick after the first run ?

But yeah Januaries can sit I only do these update annoyances once a year so I'm done eol is finally got rid of that task
