Solved Need help choosing a new home gaming router ..

We have a Verizon Quantum 100/100 connection that seems to have a lot of 'bufferbloat', according to test done here our router gets a 'C': Speed test - how fast is your internet? | DSLReports, ISP Information

We game at home, mainly the BF series, and in the last few months the connection has degraded.
Our router is the Verizon G1100.

We have four desktops and three laptops. We use Windows 10 on all but one and that will change.


I have been looking for a new router and reading reviews like crazy.
I'm working on a headache right now.


Anyway can anyone offer some knowledge/advice on getting a gaming router,
and whether or not the manufacturer has good technical support?



Most routers seem to review well but then when reading complaints about them they go kaput.


I assume that I should have a router that has QoS and MU-MIMO.

You don't say whether you want wired or wireless connections.

You only NEED MU-MIMO if you are doing wireless. Ask yourself do you want 2.5Ghz or 5 Ghz? Check what your computers are capable of generating, as they will need to match the router.

100/100 (?-typo) refers to cable Ethernet. Get one that does 1000, if that matters to you. Most new computers can handle Gigabit wired Ethernet, but they wont benefit unless the router has that capability.

I need both wired and wireless.
100/100 are the download and upload Mbps for Verizon.
Definitely want to use 5ghz.

Okay that makes sense. I was referring to Ethernet speeds of 10/100/1000 bits/sec. 1 Gbit would be advisable these days, but your Computers Ethernet needs to be able to deliver at those speeds.

A 100 Mbps connection from your ISP should saturate the bandwidth on your router now. In fact, the router you have now is capable of 1000 Mbps. More than enough bandwidth on the WAN and LAN ports.

The fact an online speed test gave you a C means nothing. That's just a speed grade. Go to this speed test and tell me what your speed is. It should say 100 Mbps or 12.5 Kbps. SpeedOf.Me | Internet speed test

When you game, is it via ethernet or WiFi? That'll make a massive difference with ethernet being the best connection.

The speed test results are: 105.33 download and 123.65 upload and 6 ms latency. Gaming is wired!

Do any of you use special settings for: Primary DNS Server & Secondary DNS Server

Your router is working the way it should, there is no need for a new one.

As far as the DNS, you can use many different third-party DNS IP addresses, but this won't have an affect on gaming performance at all.

Two popular DNS providers are OpenDNS and Google DNS.

If you are using Windows 10, you may want to use a program called Shutup10 or something else. Windows 10 makes a horde amount of connections and along with forced updates and what not, that is likely the source of the lag or anything in your game. It could even be GPU driver related. I wouldn't let Windows update installed drivers.
