Hello, new guy here.

I just recently installed Win7 Ultimate on my Dad's old Dell (Inspiron 4110) after an HDD death, and while everything seems to be working fine (thanks in no small part to the fact that now he's got an SSD), I'm getting this weird Kernel error whenever his AVG Antivirus tries to update its virus database.

I've looked around for a fix, but they all tell me the same thing: "Install Windows Upgrade KB2533623". Problem is, that update doesn't show in my update list, and when I download the update file and try to apply it, it tells me that the update is not meant for that Windows.

Is there some other fix to that error message? Or is there something else I should do? Thanks in advance.

P.D. Not sure if I posted this on the right place.

Hi Blake81,
Welcome to Sevenforums!
Did you try AVG Repair?

Yup! Standard procedure for me. Wouldn't be asking for help if I hadn't tried most everything I know off.

Also, I have the same AVG on my own rig, which has the exact same Win7 as I put on my father's laptop. Only difference is that my hardware's a lot newer, but I highly doubt that's related. Plus, I did double-check and AVG still offers Win7 support, so it isn't a support issue either.

Microsoft Windows 7 Update KB2533623 needed to install Dell

Solution

The End User / IT Administrator must ensure KB2533623 is installed on Dell client commercial and consumers systems running on Windows 7 operating systems (32-bit or 64-bit) before attempting to install the Dell Update Package, or when encountered with this error and before re-attempting to install the particular Dell Update Package.
The KB can be downloaded from Microsoft from the following site by selecting the Windows 7 operating system and architecture: Update for Windows 7 (KB2533623)

OK, tried that and it didn't solve it. Update failed whenever I tried to install it. However... I managed to solve the problem in a rather... unorthodox way.

I created a Bootable Ubuntu USB, booted from it and copied Kernel32.dll from the old disk to the new one... Error's gone now. So I guess we can mark this as solved.
