ESET Earns Record-Breaking 58th VB100 Award

DELHI – October 7, 2009 – ESET, the leader in proactive threat protection, today announced that it has captured a record 58th VB100 award from Virus Bulletin, the widely-respected independent comparative testing group. October's report focused on the Windows Server 2008 platform. 11 of the 26 entries were awarded the VB100 designation.

Virus Bulletin introduced its first VB100 award in 1998, and conducts several comparatives every year, rotating its platforms between Linux, Windows, Windows servers and Novell Netware. In order to display the VB100 logo, an antivirus product must meet two criteria: (1) Demonstrate it detects all "In-the-Wild" viruses during both on-demand and on-access scanning; and, (2) Generate no false positives when scanning a set of clean files. Since the inception of VB100 awards in 1998, ESET's antivirus products continue to boast a success rate of over 96 percent - the industry's highest. Most antivirus vendors have success ratios in the 50 – 75 percent range.

"ESET showed some excellent detection rates, with commendably even scores across the trojans and the reactive parts of the RAP set indicating steady handling of new samples, and a splendid showing in the proactive set making for a very high overall average," said John Hawes, Virus Bulletin. "With no false positives ESET is the worthy winner of yet another VB100 award, thus maintaining NOD32's position as the product with the largest number of VB100 awards."

I actually used ESET since v2 and have a legit, good license but recently stopped using it. One day when I had ESET running, fully updated, check for updates every hour ON and start-up scan ON, I was going to terminate firefox which wasent responding so I went to task manager, turns out I had a processes called "cmd.exe" using 99% of my CPU. A quick scan with malwarebytes shown a few Trojans, and after that I was DONE with eset. Re-installed windows and now I got Kaspersky Internet security 2010 with 1 year valid license key.

So, ESET fails you when you least expect it.
Oh, and the trojan cmd.exe was actually downloaded through a USB worm, which ESET has been known for letting through.

Tough stuff! I dropped using ESS(their Smart Security) when it also let like 5 viruses and 2 trojans, and 1 keylogger in through a file that was on a USB. And the wird thing is that i got the usb from my friend, who was also using Eset... So im just staying with MSE and malwarebytes - and watching what i download

Yes, and this isent the first time ESET has failed me. It did a year or two back because of the conflicker worm (It said it blocked it...Yeah right) and then I had tones of trojans running in the background. I installed avira after that and it done some quick scan after I installed it and it found a few trojans, Im pretty sure Malwarebytes found over 200 infections.

There are many things that an anti virus will not pick up. So there's no need to sweat about it. For example, on a clean pc, if you install mywebsearch toolbar, many AV like eset and mse will not detect it. However, malwarebytes shows that it detected around 256 infections.

yes u r correct
.. eset is little weak .. 97% detection rate. so if u wanna use eset ..use it with any spyware prog.

eset ss + any spyware prog.. makes 100%

I use ESS, Vipre AV and Iobit 360.
However, I have snoozed Vipre and disabled real-time protection.
No performance issue so far.

Eset is one of the best security solutions out there, but even it can do the job on it's own, so it is recommended to also have installed an antispyware software

I use SUPERAntiSpyware with Nod32.AV.v4 for a very long time and never had a problem with my pc, hope this will not change soon.

i only want to make a short comment, since there are already other threads about "the best A/V´s & FW´s"....

i´m using: a normal "USER-account", MSE, Avira-free, A2-full, MBAM-free, Comodo´s FW & D+, a HOSTS-file, UAC at max, a working "main CPU" & "2 optical input units".
i have a fresh KIS-license, planning to retire MSE & Avira and switch to KIS 2010, just need to verify it´s going to work with the other protection first...

i´m using: a normal "USER-account", MSE, Avira-free, A2-full, MBAM-free, Comodo´s FW & D+, a HOSTS-file, UAC at max, a working "main CPU" & "2 optical input units".
i have a fresh KIS-license, planning to retire MSE & Avira and switch to KIS 2010, just need to verify it´s going to work with the other protection first...

Honestly, Uninstall ALL your security programs except for Malwarebytes and A2-full if its just for on-demand scans (idk what it is!) and use KIS 2010. Very light. Very fast. Very protective and has many shields. Malwarebytes is good for once-a-month scans IMO. Also, you can keep UAC at whatever you want. But remember, KIS 2010 has a firewall and so does COMODO FW with defense+, and more than one firewall is just the same as no firewall. Hope that works for you!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. NOD32 is THE best av software available. Despite some of the poster's here negative comments, NOD32 remains on top of all other products and the title of this thread is the proof of that statement

Each to his own I guess, but I personally don't think it is the best. I'm not sure there is a "best" AV really. A combo of various security apps is most likely the best approach.

I'm running Vipre AV and have had no issues, excellent system performance, quick updates from Sunbelt and no viruses or any malware to speak of. I use various online scanners on my system from time to time and so far Vipre has not let anything through and has blocked everything I have thrown it's way.

I'm looking forward to Vipre being included hopefully in the next round of testing as I have contacted Sunbelt and they have been trying to get in on the tests, which apparently is not as simple as asking to be included. It is a long process, but I do look forward to my choice of AV's being included to see how it competes with apps like Nod.

Edit: I should add though, congrats to ESET. That is an impressive record.

EDIT: Any performance slow-down? Im extremly happy with MSE!

Honestly, after using other anti-viruses, ESET is lacking in features and detection rate. It basically FAILS at blocking USB worms - So watch your back with those USB's. ESET will fail you when you least know it.

I have not been able to get anything past Norton 360 V4, Unlike ESET. Its multi-layered shields, compared to ESET's one basic shield makes it much better. NOT only that, but its MUCH lower on resources, has backup, identify theft protection (that actually works!) and tune-up (registry cleaner, disk defrag exc) and does its own thing when your AFK.

Lets see ESET, or ANY other Antivirus EVER created go less than 5.5MB RAM usage.

Vipre has excellent detection rates but it will fail due to false positives. I have a program which installs 5 apps on my phone. However, when I run it, Vipre falsely detects it as Trojan, just because it uses autorun feature.

I know you have had some false positives with Vipre. I also wish that you would report every single instance to Sunbelt so they can improve.

I have never had ONE false positive with Vipre. Strange that you seem to have so many and I have not ONE.

I did however have several false positives with ESET.
