Hey

Can anyone suggest a good open source antivirus?

I always used Avast but recently read about Avast collecting and selling data to 3rd parties.
Also it NEVER picks up anything even with thorough in depth scans and I know I've acquired the odd virus / malware etc.

I tried Moon Secure antivirus (because it has realtime shield) It uses clam engine but it crashes after updating it.
However even when scanning before updating it, it picked up a trojan that none of my antivirus / malware packages did.

I've changed to Tor Browser and using Startpage search engine.
Trying to go off "mainstream" software to avoid privacy issues.

Thanking in advance!

Just a humdrum little system.
Microsoft Security Essentials 4.10.209.0 is what I use in my Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-bit computers because it's light-weight and very user-friendly.

Microsoft will no longer update this antivirus app, so it'll remain at version 4.10.209.0, but Microsoft will continue to provide definition updates for it for at least another year.

Tor is not want you want to use for privacy. Anyone can create an exit node and read you traffic and I know damn well the NSA and the FBI have their mitts in it. You want a good non five eyes jurisdiction VPN like Protonvpn or VPN.AC.

Just be aware that a VPN can be blocked by certain services like PayPal, etc.

I don't run any anti-virus software at all. I just use the now free Sandboxie for my browser and scan ALL downloads at Virus Total. Definition based anti-virus software isn't going to help you with polymorphic malware and then these programs are so bloated with other useless crap that can and will mess with your computer or making gaming a pain in the butt.

As far as I know, ClamWin is the only open source antivirus I'm aware of, and like all antiviruses, it's not that great at what it does. There are some other separate projects that claim to give it real-time scanning capabilities but I personally distrust such claim for some reason or another.
For reference, Wikipedia list of antiviruses only list ClamWin as the only open source one, among all platforms.

None of the other suggested here are really open source, only proprietary programs that happen to have free versions.

In general, the open source industry tends to dislike antiviruses and that's an important reason why you'll see so few of them. More often than not they just exist to demand the "need" of antiviruses for Windows users on Linux servers, not aimed at workstations. And given that antiviruses also tend to cause more security problems than they solve, people coding on their own time rarely are interested in making one.

From my OneDrive link that you couldn't open.

My recommended AV’s, malware scanner, adware scanner, pup scanners
Avast Free this is what I use, Anti-virus.
BitDefender Free Edition don’t use but highly recommend, there is also paid version
Malwarebytes Premium (it’s a free 30-day trial) If you utilize the free trial, it includes MB anti-exploit & MB anti-ransomware & will remove the standalone versions that you can obtain and install through the below links. Compatible/works with your Anti-Virus!
Malwarebytes Free this is what I use, one of the best all-around scanners, period.
SuperAntiSpyware free, this is what I use, there is also a paid version that runs real-time.
ADWCleaner Malwarebytes recently purchased from Tools.lib, available on both websites
HitmanProx32 scan is free, and one time trial virus removal, you can use Revo Uninstaller
to remove it and trial cookies if it finds malware to remove, then you can use the trial again.
HitmanProx64 scan is free, and one time trial virus removal, you can use Revo Uninstaller to remove it and trial cookies if it finds malware to remove, then you can use the trial again.
Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit this is what I use, real-time exploit protection, drive-bys, SSL injection, etc.
Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware this is what I use, real-time ransomware protection.
TDSSkiller this is what I use, rootkit scanner.
VirusTotal online multi-AV scanner. If any hypertext links are broken, questions, or concerns, please let me know via Private Message (PM) on SevenForums
