CD/DVD Burner Tray Opens and Closes Too Quickly

I am wondering if the CD/DVD Burner tray in my computer is controlled by a program or if it is simply a mechanical function? When I push the button to open the door, it nearly always opens and then closes again too quickly. It doesn't even give me time to insert or remove the disc. Could this be a software issue or is it mechanical?

My computer is a Compaq Presario desktop.

How do I open my CD drive without using the button?

To do so, right-click on the optical disc drive icon inside “My Computer” and select “Eject” from the context menu. The tray will come out, and you can put the disc inside and then close it again manually.

It sounds mechanical, but it could be software. I'm leaning toward a bad eject button.

Optical drives are only around $20 unless you want a Blu-ray drive.

You wouldn't happen to have a virtual optical drive program installed, would you? Any kind of CD burning software?

I'm wondering if a 3rd party CD/DVD open/close utility was installed, used awhile, forgotten about. I tried a couple of utilities that controlled CD/DVD and USB device SafeToRemove/Eject operations -- such did not really help. I can relate to fast CD/DVD closures, never could figure out what started that and what cured that on my Pentium MMX (during the Cold War).

That's what I'm thinking too, that it trips open then closed on the same press. I have HP desktop & the tray stays open for some time before it closes.

Also, if I press the button and hold it for a bit too long that happens. Tray opens and then closes almost immediately. May be OPs issue, slow finger. :sarc:

When I burn a CD/DVD with ImgBurn when verifying the write operation on disk it cycles the tray.

HP Pavilion P7-1234, not produced anymore. I inherited it from Dad. Has quirky UEFI setup. Some programs on USB or CD/DVD won't run with either boot options UEFI Or Legacy from boot menu. Never figured out as to why.

#1 RAM slot was bad when I checked it over, had to purchase a new mobo, only found 2 available with several searches, that was about a year and a half ago.
