I have an old computer that I use for exclusively for
internet surfing (to give my new computer which I
use 6 to 8 hours/day a "rest"). It has been giving
me a problem lately: disappearing and reappearing drive D:.

This computer has 2 hard disks. One disk is 500 GB
and is divided into 2 partitions, one of which is drive C:.
The other hard disk is 160 GB and is drive D:. When I
start my computer drive D: does not appear in Windows
Explorer and in Disk Management. However if I
"Shut Down" and switch on the computer again
drive D: would appear in both Windows Explorer
and in Disk Management. Also, a mere "Restart"
does not make drive D: appear.

What must I do to get rid of this problem so that
drive D: never goes missing anymore?

Thanks to anyone who helps.

I would say there's some kind of mix-up if the drive with the C: has two partitions but the second drive is labeled as D:. In the Computer Management, what is the designation for the second partition of the drive with C:?

On the 500 GB drive, one partition is C:. What is the other drive partitions letter?

Open disk manager and try to apply different partitions letters to D: and X(?). Don't change C:

Q: On the 500 GB drive, one partition is C:. What is the other drive partitions letter?

A: G. There used to be E and F partitions but I deleted them and added
the volume to G.
I don't want to change the drive letter because Windows Media Player fails to
locate my music and video files when the drive letter is changed.

---

I changed D: to E: but the same problem remains.
Nevertheless, thanks for your advice.

Would you provide a screenshot of the Disk Management screen which shows both the volumes and the Disk information?

Also, is the D: drive a bootable drive?

Omar, I think I might be having the same problem from time to time. When your computer cold-boots/loads, does the computer seem to "need some time" to come to full desktop before partition D appears? I ask because often when I "hurry up" the computer, it does not find everything either until a little time has passed.

I brought the computer to a computer repair shop.
The technician said the second hard disk is "dead".

Thanks to those who helped!
