Hi seven forums I am having a problem with my pc today. It started when I was playing Mass Effect and all of a sudden my computer froze. I rebooted and during reboot I noticed the BOOT_DEVICE_LED was lit up solid red during the reboot. Surely enough my screen read SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE AND REBOOT... After an hour on Google ive preformed a few troubleshooting steps but noting has working. I inserted a windows 7 install disk which recognizes both of my drives, but not my OS because it isn't appering in the System Recovery Options. So I ran DISKPART, selected disk 0 where my OS is installed, selected partition 1 and marked it as active, then rebooted. Upon reboot I have a new error, BOOTMGR is missing..! Once again I booted to the disk and tried to open the Recovery Tools again but it gives me an error saying the version of system recovery is not compatible with my version of windows. So that is where I am at now any help would be appreciated because I am stumped and I would prefer not having to clean install :/ thanks I will post pictures of the errors if needed

If you have System Reserved partition as the intended boot partition, then changed the Active flag to C, it will not boot until the boot files are moved to C and it is made bootable by running Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

The error indicates first checking that the Win7 hard drive is set first to boot in BIOS and is Primary hard drive if there are others.

Is the HD listed under Storage, is set as Primary if that setting is present, and is it first in BIOS Boot Priority order?

If so google the serial listed if you don't know the make/model to get the maker so you can run HD Diagnostic extended CD scan followed by Disk Check from the Win7 DVD or Repair CD Command line.

If the HD passes then work through Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start

I know that the boot priority is or was set correctly but my BIOS isn't detecting one of my drives and I'm guessing it's the drive with my OS on it

Proceed with the steps I gave and report back on results. If you have any questions on how to perform any steps just ask back.

I can't launch startup repair because it gives me this error every time.

Revisiting this thread...

I have a bootmgr missing issue which led me down this path of system recovery. (win7)

I've tried 32 bit as well as 64bit disc. I also tried both versions via USB key as well. I can't seem to figure this out yet feel really close to resolving it. Would love you guys help on this.

You need to use the same bit version as your installed win7. You also need to boot it in the same mode as your installed win 7 ( efi or bios mode).

If it still not working, there is likely some corruption of the installation.

You could borrow my special boot media and see if you can use the nt6repair tool, which is on the desktop

update: I believe I got some progression here but now have another issue.

I manually copied "bootmgr" file from recovery disc to my c:/ directory, I restarted and it took me to... “Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change…etc” screen. (No more bootmgr missing screen).

I selected "launch startup repair" which got me through, however during the startup repair scan process it crashed.

Should I still move forward with what you suggested or does this call for a different solution? Let me know thanks

yes

there might be other issues with your installation as well. Suggest you run sfc and chkdsk from cmd prompt in my booted media first.

A recent hardware or software change…etc

that indicates a bcd problem - can be fixed with nt6repair.

Thanks SIW2, Veryyy impressive boot media btw.

Ran SFC - "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Ran chkdsk + restart - "windows failed to start..etc" screen again.

Ran "Auto book repair" - "BFSVC Error: could not open the bcd template store ..etc"

Also Ran "Boot Code" + restart - "windows failed to start..etc" screen again.

Reinstall.

Chkdsk no bad sectors..etc The only error: "Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50."

I'm trying to avoid a reinstall. This isn't a gaming system or entertainment. This is my work where I have deadline task that needs to be accomplished ASAP. Let alone I don't even have most of the applications to reinstall due to a past fire. Let me know if you're able to help me on this.

Hey Siw2,

Would it be possible to just overwrite the boot files from the disc to the C:\. I can't get into windows, but i am able to navigate the directory via "Load drivers" on the recovery options. That's how I moved the bootmgr file over, but i'm sure there's more boot files that could be copied over, no ?

My boot media has windows explorer. Why are you fooilng around with "load drivers" in recovery options?

There are also copies of the boot critical files in X:\windows\boot. But you need to know what you are doing, and the bcd entry needs to be set.

It sounds like there is some corruption of your installation. That might a physical problem with the disk, or filesystem corruption.

Check the disk is ok. Then save yourself a lot of time by reinstalling.

My boot media has windows explorer. Why are you fooilng around with "load drivers" in recovery options?

That was before I got your boot media & steps.. But I wasn't actually loading drivers, I was just using it to explore my drive to make sure all my user files/folders were still there. And also seeing how my HD was performing navigating through folders. (Everything was just fine. No harddrive glitching thru folders either. The boot files seem to be the only issue.)

There are copies of the boot critical files in X:\windows\boot. But you need to know what you are doing, and the bcd entry needs to be set

Ok, got it, because I was thinking maybe even if we could overwrite just enough files for it to trigger the repair to work properly, but I'm not familiar with what files they would be nor these bcd entry points..etc
