Hmm. Is it possible your card is getting underpowered perhaps? Or the card itself is on it's way out?

Explain what you mean by "underpowered".

Also, let me be clear, the GeForce 9500GT card was a generic, fanless, NVidia card with 512mb of DDR2 memory. The card's price was $60. I didn't want to spend hundreds on a video card since I'm not into high power graphics. I just think that even for what I bought, it should still be better than 4.3.

Here's the rating of the system I just built. I'm not sure why the graphics score for Aero Performance is lower than the gaming graphics score. Also, I had hoped this number (4.2) would have been much higher with my new video card (at least 5). My last video card was 3.3. Is the card I got not "powerful enough"?

Note: everything works fine, and I'm happy with the performance. Also, I don't game on this machine. I just feel the graphics number is too low. All latest drivers installed. Anyone know of any tweaks?

it may be simply the fact that you are running an i5. from the specs i have seen for the new i5 / i7 versus the original i7's is that the new ones are basically an i7 verson of a celeron. they are the original i7's dumbed down. i am pretty sure that this is going to effect your scores across the board. i am running an asus version of your vid card and on a e8400 system and i got 6.5 for graphics and 6.5 gaming graphics. one question though, did you add your own fan to the card or are you running it without a fan? these cards must have their own cooling. :geek::geek:

The new core i7s (socket LGA 1156) are just as good as the original core i7s (socket LGA 1366) in many applications. If you compare the core i7 860 to the core i7 920, which are the same price, you will find that the 860 is faster most of the time. It has 4 cores 8 threads, a higher clock speed, and turbo boost just like the core i7 920 but it lacks a single memory channel (which doesn't make much of a difference for a majority of applications). The one thing that makes the core i7 860 more ideal than core i7 920 is the lower idle/load power consumption by system-level integration from the chipset and socket.

Core i5 750 is basically a core i7 860 without hyperthreading and a lower clock speed. You will get 4 cores and 4 hardware threads with this processor. Right now, I'd say the core i5 750 is the best choice for performance/watt and performance/$.

the specs for the new line i have seen make them look like celerons. as for the vid card the only time you buy a card with out cooling is if you plan on doing liquid cooling. maybe it is just the i5's that seem like a celeron, but the reviews i have seen lump both together. i'll take a look at independant reviews for each sometime in the next couple of days.

I never said the board did not have cooling. To clarify, the board doesn't have a fan, it has a massive metal heatsink instead which is about twice the size of the card and wraps over the front and back of it. When I said fanless, I wanted it to be "noiseless" and not be another point of failure (failing proprietary design fan - been there done that).

I STILL say 4.3 is way too low for my video based on other numbers I'm seeing here from other members with similar hardware. I'm sure it doesn't have anything to do with the i5, those scores are up in the high 7 range.

if it makes you feel better, my htpc has a 8400GS (GS meaning silent but i fitted a fan due to 70c idle temp!!) business 3.5 and gaming 5.1 WEI. you have to remember, the 9500gt uses OLD technology, it does not even consist of GDDR3, it has a 128bit memory interface and 32 cores and a memory bandwidth of 16GB/s. so if you ask me 4.3 is reasonable for the technology.

OK, thanks. That's the kind of reply I was looking for. Now it makes sense. I'll investigate other boards. I can recycle this board into another system which is less horsepower.

Can anyone recommend a board (or chip type) which is under $100 that is based on newer technology?

i would recommend at least a 9800GT, the 9800GTX/GTX+ and GTS250 are all (according to Nvidia.com compare and buy) within 100-150 USD range.

but with further looks into it, the gts250 and 9800gtx+ are the exact same, but the gtx250 supports openGL v3.0 opposed to v2.1

so if your certain you wont game, go with the bottom end 9800GT or slightly better 9800GTX, if you want more bang for ya buck (if you need it) go for the OpenGL v3.0 GTX250 or the earlier OpenGL v2.1 9800GTX+

the only thing you gotta decide on is how much you wanna throw away, as it is the only thing that will limit you in choosing out of those as they are all within the same 100-150 price range.

and if you get a silent graphics card that is an open design (does not have a metal housing over the card) just get like a 80cm silent fan, a little air is better than none. my little 80cm fan drops the temps from 70c idle to 40c idle. and you CAN NOT hear it (maybe if you stuck it right next to your ear).

they are all HD ready and DX10 compatible.

or check it out for yourself

NVIDIA GeForce Family

Good luck.
Rick.

WEI not working

Anyone know how to sove this problem with the WEI?

When I go to the 'Performance' page, it says my computer hasn't yet been rated - there is a button labelled 'Rate This Computer' - or some such (I'm on a work machine right now)

Clicking on it does nothing, nada, zip!

I've discovered that the program it links to is called WCSTAT.exe (or some such), but running that just brings up a DOS-type window, declares an ERROR of some sort and disappears!

Any clues?
