My HP pavillion dv6-6145dx laptop keeps shutting off (power connected)

Hello everyone, My HP pavillion dv6 laptop keeps shutting down after I installed windows 10. It was working fine for a while, but then windows started logging me out everytime I tried to log in. I tried to reset my pc but windows kept logging me out and eventually just started shutting down all by itself. I remember seeing the screen saying "locking" at one point and I have never seen that before. I tried to reinstall windows with a USB but the laptop just forces itself to shutdown before windows can finish installing. I always have the power cord plugged in so I thought it could not be a problem, but then I decided to take out the battery and run the laptop using the powercord alone and it shuts down a few seconds after powering on. I am supposed to be able to run the laptop using the powercord alone and no battery right? Am I not getting enought power to my laptop? Maybe because I am in europe using an european to american power converter? the converter says 10A max 250V- . and , my power cable says input : 100-240v - 1.5A 50-60HZ and output: DC 19v --- 4.62 A

what could the problem be?

You have about a 10-year old HP Pavilion dv6-6145dx Entertainment Notebook PC which originally came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Its support site has drivers only for Windows 7 64-bit, so it was never tested to run Windows 10 64-bit.

Is the battery holding charge?
For how long you can run the computer only on battery? Power on, enter BIOS and see for how long it stays on.

Is the fan running? Is it always on and fast?
Did you ever cleaned the heat sink?

the battery really doesnt hold a charge, maybe 5 minutes maximum. the fan is running and runs faster when i try to install windows. I replaced the heat sink a long time ago and maybe it is worn out? or maybe I just need to clean it?

i will look into cleaning it and also entering the BIOS. Thank you everyone for your replies!

If the heat sink is clogged with dust (very common on old laptops) or if the fan has a problem and don't spin as it should, the CPU can get very hot and it will shut down to protect itself.

A bad battery can overload the internal power supply on the motherboard and can damage it. Remove the battery and buy a new one.

i see. I am afraid that a new battery might not fix the issue. do you think it will? well, assuming I open the laptop and clean it and then replace the battery, I should fix the issue right? I will see if I can find any videos on how to find and clean the heat sink

It may be many things that are making the laptop to shut down.
If the internal PS is already damaged, there is nothing you can do.
If it is a over temperature issue, a heat sink cleanup will solve.
Anyway, if the battery isn't holding charge, better remove it.

most likely a bad or dying battery.

I run either BatteryInfoView from nirsoft to check Battery Health
if "battery health" status (formerly known as "battery wear level" in older versions) by batteryinfoview is below 50% then it's time for a replacement

edit - I had to replace the laptop battery on my cousin's old HP pavilion dv6648se laptop with a new one since the BatteryInfoView app reported a 4% for battery health status and the laptop unexpectedly shuts down; it's external PS had a faulty wiring cord connected to the PS (not the power cord attached to it that has the plug). so I had to replace both the power supply and the battery and now my cousin's HP laptop works fine again with no unexpected shut downs. I did this about a year ago
