I was playing a game on my laptop when all of the sudden my laptop shuts off instantly. This has happened to me twice in the past week and I don't know why it does this. Can anyone explain me why this is happening? My laptop is an HP Envy Dv7-7223cl with Windows 7 Ultimate.

It's probably over heating and shutting down to prevent component damage. You can install a program like Download SpeedFan - MajorGeeks to monitor the temps and see what they are.

Is the fan running?
Have you ever tried cleaning out the air vents using a can of compressed air?

Unless you are comfortable disassembling a laptop to do a thorough clean and probably replace the thermal paste between the heat sink and the CPU you may need to take it to a reputable computer repair shop.

Check temps and report back first though.

Well, I remember hearing my fan run at the first 6 months that I bought it, and so far it doesn't seem to be running any now. HD0 has a checkmark, Temp1 and GPU have fire icons (which I assume they are overheating), and Temp2 has a blue arrow icon (which I assume this one is cold.) Well I'm no technician as I am a 16 year-old with some knowledge of computers but takes repairing one a bit too risky so I'm going to have to send this to a local PC shop nearby. For know I've set my power settings from High Performance to Power Saver which I hope buys me some time. Thanks for the info, I figured the fan not working was the problem.

Agree about the fan. Let me know how you make out, I'm curious.

Good luck.
