force log out

I often need to log out and log back in to reset Win7 (usually due to Firefox frequent CTDs, but also due to occasional "white screen" which must be endemic to this system, has been here through 2 cpus, 2 OS, and 3 vid cards)). Now my concept of the computer hierarchy is ME at the top, then windows, then all other software; so when I tell win7 to log out I want it to do so with no further ado ... no whining about programs still running, no multiple prompts, no "may lose data" notices; just shut up and log out.

What I want:
-do three finger salute
-click log out button
-next thing on monitor is log in screen

Is this possible?

(Have read numerous threads but most are concerning admins logging out other users or blocking log out/log in options, etc.)

A simple command will logoff you immediately and kill all running programs under your session:

shutdown /l /f /t 00

You may create a bat file or shortcut if you want to., but it should do.

Is "restart" completely restarting windows? or just back to login screen? Likewise for "shutdown", will that have me back at login screen or shutdown windows?

What I seek is same as Start button > "Log off 'user name'" but without all the dialog with windows before it happens.

The "shutdown" command covers all the possibliities of the close Windows dialog and a bit more in fact. Concretely, the sample I've passed means:

/l: Logoff; IE close the active session and all running programs under it and return to the Windows login. For Terminal Server connections it also closes the connection. Services and drivers continue running unaffected.

/f: Force. It means that if programs don't close gracefully after some time, terminate them forcefully. Data loss may occur.

/t 00: Timeout. Here a timeout of 0 means "right now", IE, give no time to programs to close. Anything that doesn't close gracefully almost instantly will be terminated.

The command also has switches for full restart, power off and other similar options. You may see the full explanation by issuing a "shutdown /?" command.

ThanksAlejandro. I tried the bat file and it briefly opens a DOS prompt with numerous lines of text but it closes too quickly to read, nothing else happens.

Try running it in a command line directly, or put a pause command afterwards so you can read the output.

/g Shutdown and restart the computer. After the system is
rebooted, restart any registered applications.
/a Abort a system shutdown.
This can only be used during the time-out period.
/p Turn off the local computer with no time-out or warning.
Can be used with /d and /f options.
/h Hibernate the local computer.
Can be used with the /f option.
/e Document the reason for an unexpected shutdown of a computer.
/m \\computer Specify the target computer.
/t xxx Set the time-out period before shutdown to xxx seconds.
The valid range is 0-315360000 (10 years), with a default of 30.
If the timeout period is greater than 0, the /f parameter is
implied.
/c "comment" Comment on the reason for the restart or shutdown.
Maximum of 512 characters allowed.
/f Force running applications to close without forewarning users.
The /f parameter is implied when a value greater than 0 is
specified for the /t parameter.
/d [p|u:]xx:yy Provide the reason for the restart or shutdown.
p indicates that the restart or shutdown is planned.
u indicates that the reason is user defined.
If neither p nor u is specified the restart or shutdown is
unplanned.
xx is the major reason number (positive integer less than 256).
yy is the minor reason number (positive integer less than 65536).
