After Installing Win7 - Optical Drives Not Appearing

I have three optical drives, two internal (Sony, Toshiba) and one USB external (Sony). All three drives worked flawlessly under Vista, Vista SP1, and Vista SP2. After installing Windows 7 none of the three optical drives appear under "Computer."

The drives are recognized in my system BIOS. And my IDE controller acknowledges the drives on Boot.

Windows sees the drives in the Device Manager, but puts the yellow icon next to each. Details for each drive say the same thing the drive "has been disabled because of compatibility issues with Windows (Code 48)." Driver details for each say the same thing "up to date."

I tried updating the drivers anyway, and there was no change.

I tried uninstalling the drives and rebooting so the OS could reload the drivers, and there was no change.

I tried running the troubleshooter and it could not fix the problem saying the drives "have plug and play issues."

Please help! Thanks.

Hey there amiable1.

Aside from checking with the manufacturers that those particular optical drives will work with 7, you could check out this thread as this member had a somewhat-related issue.

Try to update your BIOS and your chipset driver. There are no drivers for optical drives, don't waiste your time searching for it.

I've a similar problem but my drivers fail to install.

Contrary what's been said previously here are drivers for optical drives but they are generic SATA protocol drivers so they should work with all SATA optical drives.

Strangely I used my DVD drive to do the install and on the same day I used it to install other software. I didn't notice it's absence until I came to watch a DVD a few days later.

I've rolled back all updates and it still fails so I guess it's a hard error.

BTW I've tried three drives from different manufacturers and still no joy.

If I crack it I'll post the solution.

Two of the three optical drives are Sony. I emailed them Friday and just heard back.

The drivers for the drives are built into Windows 7 and are compatible with the OS. They sent me a screenshot to prove the fact.

This means the problem is with my software.

Amiable, as Sillyman has suggested.
Access your bios and review your drive connections.
You have 2 listed as S/ATA and 1 as USB
We are looking to see if the ATA drives are listed as SATA and also you need to see if your USB connections are enabled!

Ok, here is another crazy suggestion from DocBrown's computer science lab :geek:

Power down computer. Disconnect all optical drives. Re-start computer with NON connected, wait till windows fully loads. NOW, power down computer, again.

Connect just one optical drive at a time to see if it finds the driver automatically, are you connected to internet at the time? Power up & down for each drive one at a time to see if you get any positive results. Trial & Error Testing !

I want to thank everyone here for the help. You should know this is the most helpful forum I have EVER been on! And friendly too! You should all be proud. I think I am going to stick around, even after my problem is resolved to see if I can pass on the positive you have all given me.

Please keep the suggestions coming.

The BIOS is the newest and latest, the mobo chipset is updated with the latest compatible with Win7.

I want to remind everyone of a few things. These drives were all working fine under all builds of Vista, they didn't conk out until I installed Win7. I even used one of the drives to install Win7!

Second, Sony told me these drives DO have drivers. But the drivers are given to MS to be disseminated with the OS. When I contacted them, Sony took the drives hooked them up to Win 7 just to check and make sure the drivers they gave MS were compatible. The drivers WERE compatible! Sony even went so far as to send me a screen-capture of Device Manager to show me.

I am going to try DocBrown's suggestion, in the hopes there might have been some sort of problem with the order in which the drivers were loaded related to the many other drivers.

Thanks again, everyone.
