Microsoft Security Essentials 4.18.209.0 is what I use.
It's light-weight and very user-friendly.
Although the app version is no longer updated, it still receives definition updates.

Another vote for MSE. I find that manually downloading the definitions from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/defenderupdates is quicker, especially if I haven't updated MSE for awhile. You just run the downloaded .exe file. It will look like nothing is happening, but after awhile MSE will show that it has been updated.

This question has been asked a number of times. The old Avast free anti-virus from Archive.org will install on Windows 7, then you updated both the software and the definitions. It stays free, and stops nagging after a week or so, when it realises you're not going to buy it. Major Geeks have an installation guide.

The 'app' part of it is just the GUI (the Antimalware Client). MSE still gets the latest updates for the scan engine and the AV definitions, exactly the same ones as Windows Security in Windows 11 uses.

If I understand correctly by wikipedia, many of the anti-virus brands have been bought and/or gobbled up by Norton. Comparison of antivirus software - Wikipedia .. Norton is now called Gen Digital. Brands include AVG, AVAST, AVIRA, GEN DIGITAL (originally PC TOOLS,) and NORTON.
