Unplugged my Desktop during a lightning storm. Now no internet.

Desktop was fine before this. All I did was unplug it, when it was already off, then plug it back in after the storm. Heard a little bloop when I did that, which I think is normal.

Using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Am getting messages like 'local area connection has driver or hardware problems' and 'network adapter not working properly' when i use the windows diagnostic tools.

Using 2 year old Arris modem. Have unplugged it several times to reset it. Called tech support for my ISP, and he said he reset modem from his end, and that the internet is coming into my connection. I saw the lights flashing, left to right, on modem. All 4 lights are on.

I have Windows Defender running. Also, recently installed Malwarebytes free version. Would Malwarebytes be blocking the internet for some reason, but only after I unplugged the computer?

If all 4 lights are on on the modem, it's supposedly OK, right ?

One of the diagnostic screens says the modem state is 'disconnected'.

There was lightning near my house, but the power never went out. Lights flickered once, barely noticeably.

Any help appreciated !

I went into all the appropriate screens I know of, to investigate. Never saw any exclamation points next to drivers.

Got a message from one of the screens that 'network adapter is working properly'.

In device manager, I clicked on 'network adapter', thinking I could disable and re enable the adapter, or uninstall and reinstall, but nothing happened. Just kept showing the line for 'network adapter'. Right clicked, left-clicked, single click, double click, nothing.

I'm starting to think the outbound ethernet port on the modem got fried in the lightning storm. The light never comes on at the end of the ethernet cable, either at the modem or at the desktop, when I am testing things. Like no power getting to the port, which would explain why the status of the modem is 'disconnected', even with the cable plugged in. No light at the desktop connection either, hope the card didn't get fried.

Tried to connect to the modem using a different computer that i used before to go online, and it told me no modem detected or something like that.

As Samuria said, The storm could have done it. Once lightning struck near our house, and my garage door opener did not work after that. I had to replace it. Lightning is extremely powerful. It just forces its way into the circuitry of your house. As Samuria said, since you have an ethernet connection, that was connected, even though your desktop was unplugged.

Any way you could try using wifi? If the ethernet no longer works, perhaps wifi will. Also try a different ethernet cable. In fact I would try that first.

based on your last comment, post 5. id have to say that port,(try another port if you have any) and possibly the router is fried

comment
can you get into your router settings, (via Firefox search value 192.168.1) check if its in modem mode --- if so thats wrong
you will need the routers admin password should be a label on it

OK, Samuria, I will run those commands and get back to you.

MD, I already tried another cable. Same result. And no wifi. Don't want it. Just cables and a modem. No router. Don't want it.

Thanks for helping me out.

Here's the result of the system commands : This is with modem turned on and the cable connected to computer. And I want to mention I did get a light coming on, on the modem ethernet port, for just a second, when I plugged the power cord into it. No more light after that.

You only provided half the information but the fault is there is no gateway set it should be the same ip as the dhcp server and the ip of your router then it will work
I cant give you the right ip as you havent given all details

What info is missing? Do you mean the numbers for ipv4 and ipv6 ?

And is there a way I can drag and drop from the screen in command prompt results? I wasn't able to. I had to type it all out.

I included all the results except the 'lots of numbers' parts.

I don't have a router. Just a modem.

And could it be that the default gateway is blank because no signal is getting out from the port on the modem ?

There was no listing of a 'dhcp server' in the ipconfig report.

Thanks

OK, I went back onto my computer and ran the ipconfig /all command again, and I now have what I think is the the missing info you wanted. I haven't left anything out.

link-local ipv6 address : fe80::ad4a:219d:d347:a958%10(deprecated)

autoconfiguration IPV4 address 169.254.169.88(tentative) <<< is this what you are calling the DHCP server ?

that means its not getting an IP

Does the modem show connected any sign of traffic

Cmd prompt you should be able to highlight text and copy it

The only sign of life on the modem is that all 4 lights are on, as they should be, and the only time I see the light come on on the modem's ethernet port is when I plug the power cord in, and it lights up for one second, then goes off. No blinking.

The network screens say the connection for the broadband is 'disconnected', even though cable is in.

When I go into the screens for 'modem' all it shows is a telephone, as though it is a dialup connection. When I tell it to list available modems, all it shows is Rockwell 56K dialup modem. I was connected to broadband on this computer, of course, so I know it does accept broadband internet.
I tried to create a new broadband network, and 'connect to existing broadband network', but it always says something like 'no connection available' or something is 'disconnected'.

Another weird thing is that when I read through the huge diagnostic report that WIndows it offered, it was always trying to lookup phone numbers to dial, and getting some error, like it was trying to connect to dialup, even though I was always specifying broadband. It's an old machine, and has dialup capability, as well as broadband.

Getting back to basic, though, could the modem's ethernet port not working cause Windows to not get an IP address? Was 169.254.169.88(tentative) the IP it was expecting to find on the DCHP server on the modem ?

OK, I ran the msinfo32 cmd. First thing I want to mention is that when i clicked on 'modem', nothing happened, no other screen opened, nothing. Makes me think the desktop is not seeing a modem, since the outgoing port on the modem is maybe zapped.

Another thing. When I clicked on 'network connections' , nothing. No error message, just nothing.

Doesn't this indicate the modem is hosed up in some way?

network adapter info said adapter was enabled, had a dhcp server ip address, default gateway blank

I saw some mysterious numbers in the msinfo32 readout, but why mention them, right, if we know the modem needs to be replaced? I have a new modem coming in the mail, by the way.

Another thing: I got the above results with the modem turned on, and connected to the pc. I unplugged the modem, shut down the pc, restarted the pc, ran msinfo32 again and got the same numbers. no change. like the pc doesn't notice the the modem in either situation. Again, I assume the outgoing port is hosed, therefore pc doesn't get signal from it.

I could not get the text off of the report. No zip, no copy and paste, unfortunately.
the lease started 3 days ago, and expired 7/31. I think the cable co tech must have done that when i called them up for assistance. Does the expired lease matter?

The adapter has a mac id, but the mac id is not the same as the one on the modem. A leftover mac id from a previous modem ? Does that matter ?

Thx

Thx for the ongoing help. My new modem arrived, and it didn't fix the problem. Now am thinking the ethernet ports on both the computer and the modem were fried by electrical surge.

I was able to get the new modem to work with an older computer (got into the internet). I wasn't able to do that with the old modem, but it may have been because i tried Internet Explorer and not Firefox. I used FF this time, and got in.

Will try old modem with old computer and firefox, see if still doesn't work, even with FF. If doesn't work, will deduce that ethernet port on old modem is fried. Status of ethernet port on newer computer uncertain.
